A New Era in Social Sciences Effective Support, Motivate Members, Endorse Best-Practices, Share Updates Comprehensive Instructional Sequence (CIS)- DEFINITION: Series of 3-4 “close readings” of a complex informational text wrapped around an Essential Question Content is social studies-based, but focus is comprehending text and writing in response to text Each reading has its own purpose and tool Each reading uses a gradual release process, followed by discussion I Do: Teacher reads and models use of tool in a “think aloud” process We Do: Student and a partner reads and teacher supports student use of tool You Do: Students use tool independently Focuses on social studies content while practicing reading skills Supports evidence-based conclusions Scaffolds deeper comprehension of social studies content

A New Era in Social Sciences Effective Support, Motivate Members, Endorse Best-Practices, Share Updates C-I-S Comprehensive Instructional Sequence Steps to Implement: Review benchmark/standard to identify essential content/skill. Find a reading/text related to the content of the benchmark. Create the student CIS template with all necessary steps (e.g., predictive response, text coding etc.). Complete the CIS following student template and gradual release of student responsibility working toward completing the ending writing assignment. While people are arriving, they are to read the article on Instructional Coaching and the Classroom Walkthrough Document as a bell ringer/do now.
