Review: Write each of the following percentages in decimal form © Copyright all rights reserved to Homework depot: www.BCMath.ca

Percentage of a Number When looking for the “percentage” of a number, multiply the number by the percentage Sometimes it’s easier to convert the percentage to decimal form first Ie: Find 50% of $60 So 50% of $60 is $30 Some percentages are easy to find, like 10% is 0.1, 20% is 0.2, 30% is 0.3 ,.... and 100% is 1.00 Note: When asked to find 100% of a number, it is basically the number itself © Copyright all rights reserved to Homework depot: www.BCMath.ca

Ex: Evaluate the given percentage for each number: © Copyright all rights reserved to Homework depot: www.BCMath.ca

Note: all percentages can be written as a fraction When looking for the percentage of a number, it may be easier to just multiply by the corresponding fraction Ie: Find 75% of 124 75% is equal to ¾ In the text book, there are questions that want us to find a fraction of a percent ie: Find ¼% of 50 ¼ % is not the same as 0.25 it is actually 0.25 ÷ 100 Which is 0.0025 So multiply the number by the fraction AND then divide by 100 © Copyright all rights reserved to Homework depot: www.BCMath.ca

Practice: Find the percentage of each number When asked to find a fractional percent of a number, multiply that number by the fraction and divide by 100

In some cases, it is better to breakup the percentage as the sum of two or more percentages that are easier to calculate Ie: Calculate 11% of 350 © Copyright all rights reserved to Homework depot: www.BCMath.ca

Practice: Jason is applying for a program at UBC Practice: Jason is applying for a program at UBC. In order to be accepted he needs to get at least 68% on the entrance exam. If the maximum score on the exam is 120pts, what is the minimum score that Jason needs to get? Jason needs 81.6 points on the entrance exam to be accepted in the program at UBC © Copyright all rights reserved to Homework depot: www.BCMath.ca
