What is wise Christian leadership? (part one) 1 Corinthians 3:1-17

Outline of this Section 1 Cor. 3:1-4 Paul & Apollos: You think it is all about you! 1 Cor. 3:5-9 Parable of the field & the farmers 1 Cor. 3:10-17 Parable of the building & the builders 1 Cor. 3:18-4:7 Paul, Apollos, Cephas: It is really about Christ! 1 Cor. 4:8-16 A Concluding Personal Appeal from Their Wise Leader

1 Corinthians 3:1-4 Brothers, I was not able to speak to you as spiritual people but as people of the flesh, as babies in Christ. 2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food, because you were not yet ready for it. In fact, you are still not ready, 3 because you are still fleshly. For since there is envy and strife among you, are you not fleshly and living like unbelievers? 4 For whenever someone says, “I’m with Paul,” and another, “I’m with Apollos,” are you not unspiritual people?

1 Corinthians 3:1-4 Brothers, I was not able to speak to you as spiritual people but as people of the flesh, as babies in Christ. 2 I gave you milk to drink, not solid food, because you were not yet ready for it. In fact, you are still not ready, 3 because you are still fleshly. For since there is envy and strife among you, are you not fleshly and living like unbelievers? 4 For whenever someone says, “I’m with Paul,” and another, “I’m with Apollos,” are you not unspiritual people? The Corinthians thought that they, more than other people, were ready for deeper truths & teachings because of their giftedness

The Corinthians thought that their devotion to certain leaders showed their wisdom

Paul intentionally withheld teaching from them because of their divisions & relational brokenness

Conclusions We can be (often are) self-deceived in our evaluation of our own maturity Our giftedness is not the primary qualification for or hindrance to ministry Relational health is a key indicator of our progress in God’s wisdom (the “deeper things”) Relational dysfunction will impede our ability to grasp & absorb biblical teachings Teaching & knowledge are very important

1 Corinthians 3:5-9 5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.8 Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field…

Paul & Apollos are servants (not masters) 1 Corinthians 3:5-9 5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.8 Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field… Paul & Apollos are servants (not masters)

Paul & Apollos each embraced their role within the mission 1 Corinthians 3:5-9 5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.8 Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field… Paul & Apollos each embraced their role within the mission

Their roles were assigned by God, not man 1 Corinthians 3:5-9 5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.8 Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field… Their roles were assigned by God, not man

Their roles were held up as equal in value 1 Corinthians 3:5-9 5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.8 Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field… Their roles were held up as equal in value

1 Corinthians 3:5-9 God gives the growth! 5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.8 Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field… God gives the growth!

Human leaders are secondary to God’s leadership 1 Corinthians 3:5-9 5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.8 Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field… Human leaders are secondary to God’s leadership

1 Corinthians 3:5-9 Galatians 2:11-14  11 But when Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face because he stood condemned. 12 For he regularly ate with the Gentiles before certain men came from James. However, when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, because he feared those from the circumcision party. 13 Then the rest of the Jews joined his hypocrisy, so that even Barnabas was carried away by their hypocrisy.14 But when I saw that they were deviating from the truth of the gospel, I told Cephas in front of everyone, “If you, who are a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel Gentiles to live like Jews?” 5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.8 Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field…

Human leaders lead well when they are together under God’s purpose 1 Corinthians 3:5-9 5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field… Human leaders lead well when they are together under God’s purpose

Leaders are rewarded for their own labor 1 Corinthians 3:5-9 5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field… Leaders are rewarded for their own labor

Human leaders are God’s co-workers 1 Corinthians 3:5-9 5 What then is Apollos? And what is Paul? They are servants through whom you believed, and each has the role the Lord has given. 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So then neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.8 Now the one planting and the one watering are one in purpose, and each will receive his own reward according to his own labor. 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field… Human leaders are God’s co-workers

Conclusions Wise leaders are good followers Wise leaders are clear on their loyalty Wise leaders know their limits Wise leaders will receive a reward for their labor

1 Corinthians 3:9-17 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field, God’s building.10 According to God’s grace that was given to me, I have laid a foundation as a skilled master builder, and another builds on it. But each one must be careful how he builds on it. 11 For no one can lay any other foundation than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on that foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 each one’s work will become obvious, for the day will

1 Corinthians 3:9-17 disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one’s work. 14 If anyone’s work that he has built survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, it will be lost, but he will be saved; yet it will be like an escape through fire. 16 Don’t you yourselves know that you are God’s sanctuary and that the Spirit of God lives in you? 17 If anyone destroys God’s sanctuary, God will destroy him; for God’s sanctuary is holy, and that is what you are.

Paul was the “wise architect builder” 1 Corinthians 3:9-17 9 For we are God’s coworkers. 12 If anyone builds on that foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 each one’s work will become obvious, for the day will Paul was the “wise architect builder”

Later builders must be careful how they build 1 Corinthians 3:9-17 9 For we are God’s coworkers. You are God’s field, God’s building.10 According to God’s grace that was given to me, I have laid a foundation as a skilled master builder, and another builds on it. But each one must be careful how he builds on it.11 For no one can lay any other foundation than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on that foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 each one’s work will become obvious, for the day will Later builders must be careful how they build

Later builders must build in accord with the foundation 1 Corinthians 3:9-17 9 For we are God’s coworkers. 12 If anyone builds on that foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 each one’s work will become obvious, for the day will Later builders must build in accord with the foundation

1 Corinthians 3:9-17 12 If anyone builds on that foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13 each one’s work will become obvious, for the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one’s work. The inspection/judgment day will reveal the quality of each builder’s work

Those who build well will be rewarded by the Inspector 1 Corinthians 3:9-17 disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one’s work. Those who build well will be rewarded by the Inspector

Those who believe in Christ but build poorly will have their work burned up

Believers in a given location are God’s building/sanctuary 1 Corinthians 3:9-17 disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one’s work. Believers in a given location are God’s building/sanctuary

1 Corinthians 3:9-17 Those who intentionally or unintentionally destroy/corrupt God’s “building” will be ruined by God disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one’s work.

Conclusions Wise leaders build deeply into the foundation of the Gospel (cross) Wise leaders build upon the Gospel in accord with the Gospel Leaders should be (will be) evaluated
