Revising Distribution Requirements Preliminary draft from the Senate Working Group

Working Group members SA reps: Rushi Bhalani, Palvasha Deme Humanities faculty: Professors Wildenthal (History), Bader (Art History), Emden (Classical and European Studies) Social Sciences faculty: Professors Stoll (Political Science) and McIntosh (Anthropology) Natural Sciences faculty: Professors Killian (Physics and Astronomy) and Caprette (Biosciences) Engineering faculty: Professors Grande-Allen (Bioengineering) and Griffin (CEVE) Vice-Provost for Academic Affairs: Paula Sanders

Working Group charge Identify main areas of concern regarding the current distribution requirement system Review and evaluate existing criteria for distribution courses in groups I, II, and III Make recommendations for changes that will:    a. alleviate or resolve problems and concerns    b. improve the quality of general education for students by improving the quality of the general education requirements

Why are revisions needed? Lack of clear rationale and identification criteria for distribution courses 36 credit hour distribution requirement makes 18-hour semester credit hour cap more difficult Unhappiness in Humanities with requirement that FWIS’s carry distribution credit, the majority of which is D1. Constraints on interdisciplinary FWIS’s because of need to fit a specific distribution group

Proposed solutions Make rationale for gen. ed./distribution more robust Remove Distribution credit from FWIS Revise descriptions for Groups I, II, and III to make criteria for inclusion clearer Reduce the number of required courses in each of the three groups to 3, instead of the current 4 Required distribution credit hours reduced from 36 to 27 FWIS writing requirement (3 credit hours) remains a separate general education requirement Total Gen Ed credit hours required: 30

Process Working Group produces preliminary draft by Feb. 6 Draft is circulated for input by faculty and students Additional revisions by the Working Group by Feb. 20 Revised draft submitted to Faculty Senate for comments Feb. 22 Additional revisions – draft finalized by Spring Break for March 22 Senate Executive committee meeting
