In the Power of His Might NEXT SLIDE: Lesson 2

The Promise of the Father LESSON 9 The Promise of the Father

Crossing the Red Sea is our salvation

Crossing the Red Sea is our salvation Crossing the Jordan brings us into true Christian living.

Psalm 143:10 Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness. It is the Holy Spirit who leads us across those waters:

THE FATHER gave you life

THE FATHER gave you life THE SON gave you salvation

equips you for holy living THE FATHER gave you life THE SON gave you salvation THE HOLY SPIRIT equips you for holy living

Christ’s ascension made it possible for something wonderful to occur:

Jesus sent ‘the Comforter.’

John 16:7 … if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

The Comforter is the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of Truth:

John 15:26 But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:

John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

A point of clarification: What is the difference between the Holy Spirit and the Holy Ghost?

A point of clarification: What is the difference between the Holy Spirit and the Holy Ghost? The third member of the Godhead is the Holy Spirit. The indwelling Holy Spirit is called the Holy Ghost. We are baptized with the Holy Ghost. Of the popular English translations, only the KJV make this distinction.

During his resurrection appearance, Jesus prepared his disciples to receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost:

John 20:22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: During his resurrection appearance, Jesus prepared his disciples to receive the baptism of the Holy Ghost:

He said they would be clothed with power from on high.

Luke 24:49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. He said they would be clothed with power from on high.

This is holy power for holy service.

Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. This is holy power for holy service.

The promise of the Father was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost.

Acts 2:1-4 1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.

3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The Day of Pentecost was a very unique day The Day of Pentecost was a very unique day. This was not a charismatic revival, or a template for all future outpourings of the Holy Ghost.

The Day of Pentecost was a very unique day The Day of Pentecost was a very unique day. This was not a charismatic revival, or a template for all future outpourings of the Holy Ghost. This was a day of when many prophesies and promises were fulfilled.

Suddenly the disciples were able to do something that was impossible just moments before: A language poured out of their mouths that was entirely foreign to their ears.

The fact that they spoke a real language and not gibberish was attested to by the astonished and mostly unbelieving crowd:

Acts 2:5-8 5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. 7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

But there was even more to this: These tongues were a sign to the House of Israel, the fulfillment of a prophecy hundreds of years old:

Isaiah declared that the Jews’ contempt for God would compel him to speak to them in a foreign language:

Isaiah 28:11-12 11 For with stammering [mocking] lips and another tongue will he speak to this people. 12 To whom he said, This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest; and this is the refreshing: yet they would not hear.

Like many prophecies, this one has several layers of application.

In the years of the Babylonian captivity, the foreign tongue of the Babylonians was a constant reminder to the Jews that their sins had cost them their homeland.

it is always unbelief that keeps God’s people from entering into his rest – – whether they are wandering in the wilderness or held captive in Babylon.

Jesus also made a promise of rest. They would not hear him either.

Matthew 11:28-30 28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

On the Day of Pentecost – just 50 days after the Jews had rejected their Messiah – God used foreign tongues to condemn his unbelieving people. This truth was verified by Paul.

1 Corinthians 14:21-22a 21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. 22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not …

1 Corinthians 14:21-22a 21 In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord. 22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not … Taken within the context of Isaiah’s prophecy, tongues are not a sign to those who do not KNOW God. They are a sign to those who know him but do not BELIEVE him.

On the Day of Pentecost, it was not the words themselves that condemned the Jews. The apostles were speaking “the wonderful works of God.” It was the language they were spoken in. God was using the languages of the Gentiles to speak his praises.

Acts 2:9-11 9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

If they had any insight into what was happening, the Jews would have realized this was a slap to their face.

If they had any insight into what was happening, the Jews would have realized this was a slap to their face. Don’t forget – they had consented to the death of Jesus just fifty days before this. God was NOT pleased with his people!

And for almost 2,000 years, it has been primarily the languages of the GENTILES that have declared the good news of Jesus Christ and “the wonderful works of God.”

The fact that there were people who understood the languages spoken by the apostles says as much about the audience as the apostles. When is the last time you were in a group of people who between them spoke so many different languages?

This part of the story is as unique to that day as the cloven tongues of fire. Again, the Day of Pentecost is not a template for all genuine outpourings of the Holy Ghost.

The Day of Pentecost had fully come, and with it came the fulfillment of many prophecies and promises.

The Prophecy of John the Baptist Matthew 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

The Prophecy of Joel Joel 2:28-29 28 And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: 29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

The Promise of the Father It was now possible for a mortal man to become “the temple of the Holy Ghost” (1 Cor 6:19).

A Ribbon was Cut to Global Outreach Acts 2:38-39 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
