What are SATs Tests and Why do children have to take them? SATs is short for Standard Assessment Tests. They are designed to help parents and teachers learn more about their child’s strengths and weaknesses in Reading, Maths, Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation. SATs are used to inform the final teacher judgement by the end of Year 2. In May (Year 2) children will be assessed on English grammar, punctuation and spelling (GPS), Maths and Reading.  These tests are designed to enable pupils to demonstrate their attainment and are not strictly timed since the ability to work at pace is not part of the process.   Phonic knowledge will continue to be assessed with the Phonics Screening.

English: Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Tests Paper 1 (Spelling): 20 words 20 marks 15 minutes (approx time) Paper 2 (Grammar, Punctuation and Vocabulary) Questions based on technical skills 20 minutes (approx time) Please see examples in handouts

English: Reading Tests Paper 1: Reading booklet with reading questions and answer space combined(a selection of texts, 400-700 words) 20 marks 30 minutes (approx time) Paper 2: Reading booklet and separate answer booklet 20 marks(a selection of texts, 800-1100 words) 40 minutes (approx time)

English: Reading Tests All children sit both. Can be withdrawn at any time once started Gets progressively harder Emphasis on comprehension elements of the National Curriculum Example – See handout

English: Teacher assessment of writing There is no longer a test for English writing The Grammar, punctuation and Spelling Test outcomes will be used to support the teacher assessment of writing Teachers base their judgement on a broad range of evidence from across the curriculum for each pupil Examples – See handout

Maths Tests Paper 1(Arithmetic): Assessed pupils’ confidence & mathematical fluency with whole numbers, place value & counting 25 marks 20 minutes (approx time) Paper 2 (Mathematical Reasoning): Mathematical fluency, solving mathematical problems and mathematical reasoning 35 marks 35 minutes (approx time) Example – See handout

KS1 Assessment Throughout Year 2 your child has had the opportunity to practise answering the types of questions they may be presented with during a test using model papers. Teacher assessment is used to judge children's performance in a subject over a longer period of time.  The results of teacher assessment are equally important, as a teacher may feel your child is doing better in a subject as a whole than in the parts of it covered by a test.

SPECIAL EDUCATIONAL NEEDS Some support can be given to children who have a special educational needs’. Requests for additional time will be made by teachers using their knowledge of children and the children’s individual needs, especially if they have “dyslexia type difficulties”. Unless there are exceptional circumstances, no help can be given with the English tests. A teacher can help a child to read instructions on the maths test. Children with visual impairment can have an enlarged copy of the test. Children who do not have English as a first language can have a translator for maths.

Guidance for teachers In 2018, teacher assessments must be reported to the local authority using the standards set out in the interim teacher assessment frameworks. SAT Timetable The KS1 SATs will take part in May, after Easter holidays. They are completed during the normal day to day activities, all assessments will need to be completed by the end of May 2018. The children are used to completing these papers and should feel no extra pressure or stress. Some will not even know they have taken them!

When will you know how well your child has done? This information is sent out to parents in your child’s report at the end of the school year. In addition, you will receive regular updates about your child’s progress throughout the school year.  You are very welcome to seek updates from your child’s class teacher throughout the year.

What level should my child achieve? The move to scaled scores rather than levels has been implemented since 2016. The score 100 will always represent the ‘national standard’ – the expected attainment.  Therefore we are aiming for all pupils to achieve a score of 100+. Working below- significantly below 100 Working towards the national standard- below 100 Working at national standard (expected) - 100 Working at greater depth within the national standard (exceeding) – 100 and above

Key Messages Handwriting Spelling – profile raised Word lists READ and SPELL Reading- all about UNDERSTANDING what you have read Ask questions, don’t just ‘hear’ reading Punctuation must be ‘mostly right’ (./A/,/?/!/’) Grammar- “I taked it!” Correct them! Vocabulary – read widely, model, talk about word meaning and alternatives (e.g. what does exhausted mean?) Timetables (2,3,5,10) and number bonds (e.g. 4+6 = 10 so 40+60+100 and 34+66=100) ESSENTIAL. Practise! Fractions of a number (whole, half and third)

Extra Support It is important to be calm and relaxed about SATs.  The more you worry, the more anxious your child will become. Completion of homework. Read regularly with your child. Have FUN! Play games with you children such as Snakes and ladders, Bingo & Uno to consolidate counting, & addition/subtraction strategies. Spelling games such as scrabble, word searches are brilliant for young children to learn spellings. Speak to your child’s class teacher if you have any concerns.

What can we do at home? There are a few important things that you can do to help during the week: Ensure they have early nights Attendance and Punctuality is vital! Have a good breakfast in the morning 3. Drink plenty of water 4. Talk to the children and explain that there is life after the tests! Don’t let them get worked up. S.A.T’s are only one measure of the children’s attainment and progress.
