Presentation transcript:

Enlightenment #2: Age of Reason Name 1 superstition you’ve heard in your lifetime. Example: “Step on a crack break your mama’s back” Get out Enlight #1: Notes on pgs. 189-191 (Start w/Roots of Modern Science and STOP at Scientific Method --- don’t read scientific method) Put in notebook

Revolution Overthrow of something old, replace it w/ something new Scientific Revolution: question old ways (Aristotle) and experiment to find truth Even if it contradicts Church

The Age of Enlightenment The Enlightenment: a philosophical movement that advocated ( ) reason and logic as the basis of authority and should be used to solve social problems

5 Enlightenment Ideas Reason & logic Natural laws (science) govern the universe Happiness: could be achieved in this lifetime Progress: society could improve Liberty: freedom

Does this statement represent Enlightenment ideas? Yes / No. The heliocentric theory is correct. People are born with the right to life, liberty and own property. Governments that do not grant people their rights should be overthrown. An absolute monarch is necessary to keep order. A king has the right to tax his people heavily in order to build a palace. People should have freedom of speech & religion. People should have the right to go to school. If Aristotle said it, it’s right. No proof necessary.

What does this tell you about the king? French king’s palace What does this tell you about the king?

King Louis XIV (14) of France called himself the “Sun King” Believed country revolved around him Absolute monarch Builds Palace of Versailles – an extravagant palace outside Paris

On left… Define the Enlightenment in your own words. Give an example of something an Enlightenment philosopher would NOT believe in. (Use 1 of mine or make up your own). Which of these 5 ideas would Americans agree with the MOST today? Explain. Are there any ideas that Americans would NOT agree with today? Explain. What does this (answers to #3 and 4) tell us about the importance of the Enlightenment today?

Before you go… What is a revolution? What was the “medieval view” regarding science? What is the geocentric view of the solar system? What is the heliocentric? Who created the heliocentric view? Who got in trouble for teaching it? **STOP HERE**
