Do Now Read the primary source from Pope Gregory (The first one) and answer the following: In what ways did the papacy assert its power and over whom? Which of these powers might have threatened the power of secular rulers?

Where is this? Why would this area cause conflict?

Why Fight? Pope Urban II 1095 “Jerusalem is now held captive by the enemies of Christ and is subjected, by those who do not know God, to the worship of the heathen (unconverted). She seeks… to be liberated, and (implores) you to come to her aid. On whom, therefore, rests the labor of avenging these wrongs and of recovering this territory, if not upon you?”

What does this mean? Why would it inspire people to fight? “All who die by the way, whether by land or by sea, or in battle against the [Muslims}, shall have immediate remission of sins. This I grant them through the power of God with which I am invested.” – Pope Urban II

Affect of Crusades on the West Positives Trade expanded Developments from Muslims came to Europe Luxury goods: silk, spices, pearls. Military technology +++ Music/liturature Chivalry= +view of women Spread of Christianity=Exploration!!! Land returned to Monarchs Negatives Jerusalem remains in Muslim Control Constantinople ravaged No respect for Crusaders due to damage caused/innocent people hurt Jews slaughtered Land returned to Monarchs=more power 
