Successful students… are organised Use a diary Meet deadlines Plan their week and show it to you Arrive on time, prepared and ready – having had enough sleep Engage fully with the subject and read in depth.

Successful students… get the balance right Use their study periods, not free periods, to complete work. Get the balance right – study time / social time / driving lessons / work experience / uni open days etc. Golden ratio 25% in the library/50% in the study centre/25% in the Foundation Room (common room). 5 hours per subject per week.

Successful students… take responsibility Take responsibility – e.g. absence and communicating with their teachers, making sure that work is not missed Don’t waste time frivolously – we cannot authorise absence unless it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Latitude Festival doesn’t count – they can do that in Y13… Do less than 10 hours of paid employment and complete 5 hours of work per subject per week.

Assessment We monitor every student. Half termly assessments and attitude to learning checks are the key indicators and are communicated home. Go4Schools – online portal shows key information, reporting home and displaying progress/attendance. Parents evening, regular attitude to learning reports, half termly assessments, end of year pre public exams and an end of year report all indicate progress.

ALPS - minimum expected grades We set minimum expected grades -we do not want to cap aspiration. These minimum grades are calculated from the student’s average GCSE score. Minimum expected grades are set at the 75th percentile – so what does that mean?

Let’s say a student has an average GCSE score of 47 points (mainly Bs and some As at GCSE). That will produce a curve like the this.

Pre Public Exams These take place in May - Students come in only for exams that week. We set AS-level minimum expected grades to measure the half way point. Where students don’t meet minimum expected grades in the majority of their subjects, we should meet and discuss a way forward.
