Warm Up #17 How do you think an electromagnet works?

Lesson 2: Making Magnets with an Electric Current Ch. 10 Magnetism Lesson 2: Making Magnets with an Electric Current

Essential Questions Why does a magnet apply a force on an electric current? How do electromagnets and permanent magnets differ? How do electric motors use magnets?

Making Electromagnets The magnetic field of the coil causes the ferromagnetic core to become a magnet The core greatly increases the strength of the coil’s magnetic field, which makes the electromagnet’s force stronger As the number of loops in the coil increases, the magnetic field of the electromagnet becomes stronger

Properties of Electromagnets An electromagnet is a special type of temporary magnet The magnetic field around the electromagnet can be turned off by turning off the current The strength of an electromagnet can be controlled The poles of an electromagnet can be reversed

Magnets and Electric Motors Electric motor – a device that uses an electric current to produce motion Ex.: power tools, electric fans, hair dryers, computers, microwaves Main parts are a coil of wire connected to a rotating shaft, a permanent magnet, and a source of electric energy

Making the Motor Spin One useful property of electromagnets is their magnetic poles easily can be reversed, which is what makes an electric motor spin

Using Electric Motors As the electromagnet spins, the shaft spins too, which is used to create other motions Used to move windshield wipers, powered windows, CD players to spin the disk, etc.
