Hopi Native Americans

Location The Hopi lived in Arizona, California and parts of southern Nevada.

How They Gathered Food The Hopi were farmers. What they grew: corn, pumpkins, squash, beans, melons, fruit

Clothing Hopi men didn't wear much clothing-- only breechcloths or short kilts (men's skirts). Hopi women wore knee-length cotton dresses called mantas. c) A manta fastened at a woman's right shoulder, leaving her left shoulder bare. Men and women both wore deerskin moccasins on their feet Some clothes were made from wool.

Clothing

Shelters Hopis live in pueblos that are made of stone and mud and stand several stories high. Pueblos were made out of Adobe which is mud.

Kivas The Kivas are an underground chamber in the pueblo home that they used to talk and have religious ceremonies in

Culture Women owned the land and house that the family lived on. Women cooked, cleaned, took care of the kids, and wove baskets. Men harvested food, hunted, performed ceremonies and the did the weaving.

Culture Continued They made clay pottery. They had carvings and elaborate designs on them. Most of their designs told a story. Kachina Dolls: Dolls that are strong spirits that control nature.

Other Interesting Information The Hopi has had the same method of making baskets for hundreds of years. Hopi weavers made all ceremonial costumes. When a child is born they get a special blanket and a perfect ear of corn.  On the 20th day they take the child to the mesa cliff and hold it facing the rising sun.  When the sun hits the baby is given a name.
