Proposing Projects In Digital History Shawn Martin School of Informatics, Computing and Engineering

Andrew and Theophilus Wylie

Glenn Black Lab

What Argument Do We Want to Make out of these Materials? Leadership at Indiana University How these two men contributed administratively to IU? What was their contribution to their fields (religion and science)? What was their contribution to the state of Indiana? How did they reflect their time period? What was the lasting impact of the Wylies?

What Digital Method Helps Make that Argument? Social Network Analysis Geographic Information Systems Textual Analysis Presentation of Materials

Practical Considerations Tool support and availability Library (of which Wylie House and IU Archives are a part) ssupport use of : https://omeka.org/

Practical Considerations Who is your audience? Educational Academic What is the purpose of the project Public History Part of a larger digital scholarship initiative How are you funded?

Practical Considerations How will project impact the world? How will that be assessed What tools will you use to measure that Sustainability How will project be managed over time Who will ensure that the project will continue once you have finished initial work

Answering these Questions for Wylie Project Funding – Bicentennial Commission Student Involvement Education Celebrate IU’s achievements Libraries – particularly Wylie House Infrastructure for further development

Using these Questions to Create a Historical Argument Why are Andrew and Theophilus Wylie important? Represent a transitional moment in history of American higher education Should professors be researchers or teachers? Is evolution fact or fiction? What is role of religion in society?

What About Your Projects? Take a few minutes to think about your project: What is historical argument you want to make? What are practical considerations (audience, funders technology) that will influence your projects? How are you going to address these issues in your own proposals?
