Evolution

What is the definition of Evolution?

Evolution is defined as.. The cumulative changes in a group of organisms through time Change in Allele Frequencies overtime Genetic modification over time Descent with modification

The root of many misconceptions about evolution is not understanding science. So, what is Science?

Science Philosophy Opinions Observations Measurements Art Hypothesize Experiments Data Music Natural World Astrology

Science is a process by which knowledge about the physical universe is obtained, observed and explained.

Evolution deals with how life changed AFTER its origin. True Evolution deals with how life changed AFTER its origin.

Evolution is about progress and improvement. Humans Misconception Fish Bugs Bacteria

Evolution is not a ladder of progress No organism is perfect Organisms at the tip of the branches are not better or more advanced than those on the other branches.

Organisms try to adapt. Misconception Adaptation doesn’t involve ‘trying’, either the genes for a trait are present or they are not.

Only the strongest survive Misconception Strong has nothing to do with it, which ever traits are best suited for the environment will survive and reproduce. .

Natural Selection works on existing genetic variation True

Genetic mutations are what is random. Evolution is random Misconception Organisms with a particular genetic make up survive and reproduce, then pass on their genes. Genetic mutations are what is random.

An organisms can evolve over its own lifetime Misconception Evolution takes place over multiple generations, individuals cannot evolve over their own lifetime.

If giraffe ancestors had short necks, how did today’s giraffes come to have such long ones?
