William Bradford Of Plymouth Plantation

Background Information Bradford (from England) joined a group of Puritans who believed the Church of England was corrupt They had to flee to Holland and from there set sail to North America 13 years after the first permanent Englishment settlement (in Jamestown, VA) Bradford helped lead the Pilgrims to what is now Massachusetts

Bradford Background Cont. After the death of the colony’s first leader, the Pilgrims elected Bradford governor Was reelected 30 times During his time he: Encouraged new immigration Established good relationships with the Native Americans Instituted the town meeting within the colonies

Bradford- Of Plymouth Plantation 1630 Bradford began writing Of Plymouth Plantation It is a firsthand account of the Pilgrims’ struggle to endure, sustained only by courage and unbending faith Written in simple language known as Puritan Plain Style Not published until 1856

The document has carried many names. At the top of the original text is "Of Plimoth Plantation, but newer prints of the text utilize the modern spelling, "Plymouth." The text of Bradford's journal is often referred to as "History of Plymouth Plantation It is also sometimes referred to as "William Bradford's Journal". It has also been called "The Mayflower" although it is not a ship's log and was written after the events.

So what is it? Of Plymouth Plantation is the single most complete authority for the story of the Pilgrims and the early years of the Colony they founded. The journal describes the story of the Pilgrims from 1608, when they settled in the Dutch Republic through the 1620 Mayflower voyage, until the year 1647. The book ends with a list, written in 1651, of Mayflower passengers and what happened to them.

Bradford’s Journal Bradford’s history is a blend of fact and interpretation. Records not only the events of the first 30 years but also the reactions of the colonists. It is Bradford’s simple yet vivid story, as told in his journal, that has made the Pilgrims the much-loved "spiritual ancestors of all Americans" (Samuel Eliot Morison). Bradford apparently never made an effort to publish the manuscript during his lifetime. He did intend for it to be preserved and read by others

Where did it Go? The manuscript was left in the tower of the Old South Meeting House in Boston. During the Revolutionary War, British troops occupied the church and the manuscript was lost for another century. After quotes from the missing book appeared in Samuel Wilberforce's A History of the Protestant Episcopal Church in America, in the 1850s it was discovered in the Bishop of London's library at Fulham Palace, and was published in print in 1856.

Finally Found In June 1897 the state legislature ordered publication of the history with copies of the documents associated with the return. In 1912, the Massachusetts Historical Society published a "final" authorized version of the text.
