Exodus Part 4 OT Series Sermon 12 Gabe Orea XICF – Feb 18, 2018.

Big Picture God Unknown “I am” - YHWH 3:13-14 Exodus does not deny the existence of other gods, but rejects them. Exodus recognizes the power of other gods, but makes clear that they are hopeless when confronted with the power of the God of the Israelites. Big Picture God

13 But Moses said to God, “Look, if I go to the Israelites and I say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is his name?’ then what shall I say to them?” 14 And God said to Moses, “I am that I am.” And he said, “So you must say to the Israelites, ‘I am sent me to you.’ ” 3 A definite god

1 Moses and Aaron went, and they said to Pharaoh, “Thus says Yahweh the God of Israel, ‘Release my people so that they may hold a festival for me in the desert.’ ” 2 And Pharaoh said, “Who is Yahweh that I should listen to his voice to release Israel? I do not know Yahweh, and also I will not release Israel.” 5:1-2 In the experience of Egyptians, from the highest minister of state to the humblest peasant woman, the king is experienced as a god. And he is celebrated as such. What we are seeing in these words is a threat to the king’s power from an unknown God of the slaves, — an unheard-of event! In modern terms we would speak of class struggle. All tributary modes of production have a built-in class struggle due to the unequal nature of the two sides: the king on the one hand and everybody else on the other. 5 A definite god

5 And he said, “You must not come near to here 5 And he said, “You must not come near to here. Take off your sandals from on your feet, because the place on which you are standing, it is holy ground.” 6 … And Moses hid his face because he was afraid of looking at God. 3 God is holy

Big Picture God Unknown “I am” - YHWH Human-like Divine-like Sees the misery of His people 3:7 Big Picture God

7 And Yahweh said, “Surely I have seen the misery of my people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their cry of distress because of their oppressors, for I know their sufferings. 8 And I have come down to deliver them 3 God knows our troubles

Big Picture God Unknown “I am” - YHWH Human-like Divine-like Sees the misery of His people Remembers and fulfils his promises 6:8 Big Picture God

8 And I will bring you to the land that I swore to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, and I will give it to you as a possession. I am Yahweh. 6 God is faithful

3 And I myself will harden the heart of Pharaoh, and I will make my signs and my wonders numerous in the land of Egypt. 4 And Pharaoh will not listen to you, and I will put my hand into Egypt and bring out my divisions, my people, the Israelites, from the land of Egypt with great punishments. 5 And the Egyptians will know that I am Yahweh when I stretch out my hand over Egypt and bring the Israelites out from their midst.” 7 God makes Wonders

27 And Pharaoh sent and called Moses and Aaron and said to them, “I have sinned this time. Yahweh is the righteous one, and I and my people are the wicked ones. 28 Pray to Yahweh. The thunder of God and hail are enough, and I will release you …” 29 And Moses said to him, “… I will spread out my hands to Yahweh. The thunder will stop, and the hail will be no more, so that you will know that the earth belongs to Yahweh. 9 God owns the planet

15 And the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives …16 “When you help the Hebrews give birth, you will look upon the pairs of testicles; if he is a son, you will put him to death, and if she is a daughter, she will live.” 17 But the midwives feared God, and they did not do as the king of Egypt had said to them. They let the boys live.. it is a type of fear that moves you into the right action; it is a type of fear that is based not on threats but on the recognition of God’s sovereignty, majesty, and power. I can say, in all the world, this is the only fear it is good to have. No need to fear the oppressor; no need to fear the devil; fear God and it will go well with you. 1 God owns human life
