Modular Course Overview Algebra and Trig. I (Once you have read each slide simply hit your return key to move to the next slide.)

Emporium Model Math Class Welcome to your math class! This slide show will give you information about the structure of your class. Your emporium model math class has many advantages that are not available in a traditional class which is why Southwest Tennessee has redesigned developmental math.

Individualized Instruction (Not Online Math) Please understand that this is not an online math class. Your teacher will be in the classroom and available during each class. In fact, many classes will have more than one teacher as well as assistants available to help you. If at anytime you need help, simply raise your hand and the closest Instructor will come to give you assistance.

What is Individualized Instruction? The course is designed so that each student must show mastery learning. You will spend the majority of your time on concepts that you don’t understand or have not yet mastered. Thus, you will not be required to do much work in an area that you show mastery of concepts. Every student’s math background is different and we want to help you strengthen your weak areas without spending time on concepts you already know.

Advantages in Emporium Model Mathematics Students will listen to lectures on all topics Students can watch lectures as many times as needed to help reinforce concepts. Students will not miss any lectures or assignments due to an illness or unforeseen emergency. Of course, in a traditional class, the student must get a copy of the missed notes and homework assignment.

Advantages in Emporium Model Mathematics Many students complete their math class before the end of the semester. Individualized instruction means that you can work at a faster pace and finish early. In some cases, you may be allowed to start your next required math class.

The Flipped Classroom! The emporium model uses a new popular way for students to learn known as the “Flipped Classroom”. In a traditional classroom, students listen to a lecture, take notes, and complete homework problems outside of the classroom. In a flipped classroom, students listen to lectures outside the class, take notes, and complete homework problems in the classroom where the Instructor is available to help.

Course Structure The course has 4 modules and a final exam that must be completed by the end of the semester. Please be aware that all 4 modules and final exam must be completed by the end of the semester or you will not receive a passing grade in this course. Each student will be given a schedule to follow so that you will not get behind.

Course Structure Each module is set up the following way: Video lectures and live scribes. Homework problems (Open notes and text). Self Check problems (Open notes and text). Practice Exams (Open notes and text). Module Exam at the end of the module (NO notes or Text).

Course Structure Lectures must be completed with a grade of 100% before moving to the homework sets. Module homework sets must be completed with a grade of 90% or higher before moving to the self checks. Self-checks must be completed with a grade of 80% or higher before moving to the next section. Practice Exams must be completed with a grade of 80% before taking Module Exam Each Module Exam must be completed with a grade of 70% or higher before moving to the next module. If score is below 70% you will be counseled before moving on.

Course Structure Once you have completed the 4 required modules by completing the work within the module and have completed the final exam, you are finished with the course. Some students may finish the course within 3 weeks, others may take the entire semester.

What are my options if I finish the course early? If you are able to complete the course before the start of the Flex 2 term, you may enroll in another college-level course and receive credit for both courses in the same semester. Please feel free to talk with your Instructor or the Math Dept. Chair about this option.

What if I do not complete all 4 modules? Unfortunately if you do not finish all 4 modules in one semester, you will fail the course. Please view your course schedule frequently to ensure that you are on pace to finish the course by the end of the term. The good news is… You may register for the lab class the next term and pick up with the module you ended with.

Materials Needed for Class My Labs Plus Access Code The MLP code is sold in the bookstore. Please make sure that the packet you buy has the word “plus” on it. Students may have temporary access for 21 days from the start of the semester. This is especially helpful for students waiting on their financial aid. If you finish the course within 21 days, you will not have to purchase the access code. 3-Ring Binder with dividers for your Lectures, Homework's and Self Checks Ear Buds The library offers one free pair of ear buds for every student who presents their school ID at the reception desk.

Getting Started You must be excited to start your course! Next Step: Please use your ear buds and view the orientation video that will explain your course software.
