Presentation transcript:

To learn and differentiate between diegetic and non- diegetic sound.

The Opening Describe the sound What images could be shown with this music? How can this music connote an emotion?

Opening Credits What can be seen in the opening credits? From whose point of view are the shots? Why? 0 – 2:00

Sound can be divided into two groups: Diegetic sound: A sound that comes from within a scene (talking) Non-diegetic sound: Sound that is added on after filming has finished (the Jaws theme music)

Diegetic & Non-Diegetic Create a table and separate the following sounds into groups of diegetic and non-diegetic sound Jaws theme music People talking The sound of an engine starting Music that creates a specific mood/atmosphere Silence A woman screaming

Diegetic & Non-Diegetic DIEGETIC SOUND NON-DIEGETIC SOUND  People talking   Jaws theme music  The sound of an engine starting  Music that creates a specific mood/atmosphere  A woman screaming  Silence Remember – silence is a sound created in film and therefore has to be non-diegetic . If it is not created, then you’d hear the sound of the camera and the crew in the background.

First Attack What diegetic and non-diegetic sounds can be heard throughout the clip? What do these sounds connote? Do we see the shark’s point of view? If so, when and why? During and after the attack, why does the camera keep showing the boy on the beach? Why is the shark not shown? How is this effective? 0 – 4:55

Listen to the beach scene without watching. Mapping Sounds Listen to the beach scene without watching. Make a note of the different types of sounds on the sheet. Create a key and highlight the diegetic and non-diegetic sounds in different colours. 13 – 17:22

What differences are there in the types of sound used? Mapping Sounds Fill in the other side of the sheet. Highlight the diegetic and non-diegetic sounds in different colours and create a key. What differences are there in the types of sound used? Why do you think this is? 17:22 – 21:30
