Informative essay

What am I writing? An informative essay (informs about a topic) How long is it? 4 paragraphs What are the paragraphs? Introduction -> Body #1 -> Body #2 -> Conclusion What am I quoting? 2 articles on heroes How long am I writing this? Brainstorming today; writing it next class (Thursday) ALL ESSAYS ARE DUE BY THE END OF NEXT CLASS THURSDAY 9/13

How to write an introduction paragraph Open with some general remarks on the topic (in this case the topic is what it takes to be a hero) for a few sentences The last sentence of the intro is your thesis – it sums up the point of your WHOLE essay. Sample Thesis for this essay: In these articles, Zoe Miller and Philip Zimbardo show us that a true hero _______________________________. Or According to these articles, the qualities a person needs to be a hero are [quality 1], [quality 2], and [quality 3]. 3. An intro. should only be 5-6 sentences long

How to write a body paragraph This is where your quotes from the articles will be You will in this order lead in to a topic, quote the material, (remember always introduce quote [In the article, whoever says, “…..”]) explain it for 2 sentences [repeat steps B-C] For EACH body paragraph 3. The body paragraphs will be 8 sentences each Body Paragraph 1 – Miller article Body Paragraph 2 – Zimbardo article

Sample body paragraph [on handout] 1) The most important theme of “The Ugly Duckling” is that narrow-minded people see differences as ugliness. 2) For example, at the beginning of the story, the other ducklings do not like the “ugly duckling” because he is small, not good at waddling, and much better at swimming than they are. 3) This shows that their reasons for shunning the “ugly duckling” are based only upon the ways in which he is different from them. 4) This shows that narrow-minded people refuse to accept others who are not similar to themselves. 5) In addition, towards the end of the story, the “ugly duckling” sees his reflection and meets his swan family, realizing that he is neither “ugly” nor a “duckling.” 6) This shows that although he might have been seen as an “ugly duckling,” he is, in truth, a beautiful “swan.” 7) This shows that a person who compares himself to the wrong group of people is likely to see himself as ugly and inferior, while if he decides to be open-minded and accepting of others, he will eventually discover the truth about himself. 8) The main lesson that this story teaches is that people who dislike others because they are different are needlessly prejudiced.

But remember, make sure your paragraph looks like a paragraph! The most important theme of “The Ugly Duckling” is that narrow-minded people see differences as ugliness. For example, at the beginning of the story, the other ducklings do not like the “ugly duckling” because he is small, not good at waddling, and much better at swimming than they are. This shows that their reasons for shunning the “ugly duckling” are based only upon the ways in which he is different from them. This shows that narrow-minded people refuse to accept others who are not similar to themselves. In addition, towards the end of the story, the “ugly duckling” sees his reflection and meets his swan family, realizing that he is neither “ugly” nor a “duckling.” This shows that although he might have been seen as an “ugly duckling,” he is, in truth, a beautiful “swan.” This shows that a person who compares himself to the wrong group of people is likely to see himself as ugly and inferior, while if he decides to be open-minded and accepting of others, he will eventually discover the truth about himself. The main lesson that this story teaches is that people who dislike others because they are different are needlessly prejudiced.

How to write a conclusion A conclusion is supposed to wrap up your thoughts of the essay It will be SIMILAR TO but slightly different from your introduction Close out with something thoughtful about your stance on the topic Conclusion is only 4-5 sentences (shortest paragraph)

Let’s read our essay packet to see what we are writing about

Today’s checklist – Brainstorming Basically, today I want you to do everything you need to do BEFORE we write these essays – which will be next class. Read the articles and mark up quotes you think you can use with the highlighter – remember “think about what each has to say about the qualities that make a real hero” Then, go through and explain each quote with 2 sentences each – that way most of your work for Thursday is already done When you’re through with all the quotes business, work on formulating what your Introduction and Conclusion will look like Use today to ask me questions! I won’t be able to answer any once you start writing on Thursday.

On Thursday: we will be writing and turning in our completed essays at the end of class No exceptions
