Erosion- The process of moving sediment from one place to another. Weathering-The breaking down of rocks on Earth’s surface into smaller pieces. Erosion- The process of moving sediment from one place to another. Steps of erosion- 1. rock must break up into bits of sediment. 2. erosion can move the sediment to another place. What does weathering do to rock? Weathering breaks rock into smaller pieces. What does erosion do to rock? Erosion carries broken pieces of rock from one place to another. How do weathering and erosion change the land? They break and move pieces of rock, which change the look of landforms on Earth’s surface. What is the effect of weathering? Weathering breaks down rock into smaller pieces. Have students complete a graphic organizer for cause and effect. Identify 3 causes and effects. Weathering- helps shape landforms. Water- can wear away rock salt, calcite, and limestone. Weathering- forms sinkholes. Sinkholes form when water slowly dissolves underground rock. Now ask what is the effect of weathering? Go over formation of sinkhole page 299. Show science video. Then ask by show of hands who has ever seen a sink hole before? Show pictures.

Main causes of erosion Water Wind Glaciers How does ice cause weathering? When water freezes into ice, it expands. The ice pushes against the cracks or holes in rocks that contain it, causing the rocks to break. Humus- The remains of decayed plants or animals in the soil. Horizon – A layer in the soil. Bedrock – The solid rock that forms Earth’s surface. Sand – The largest particles that make up soil. Clay – The smallest particles that make up soil.

Chapter 7: The Rock Cycle Lesson 7.4 : What is soil?

How does soil form? Soil forms through processes such as weathering and erosion. How do soils differ? Soils differ in many ways, such as particle size, moisture content, amount of humus, and weathered rock from which they form. As the process of soil formation continues, what eventually forms in the soil? Soil horizons, or layers How are the top and bottom horizons of soil different? The top horizon contains humus, while the bottom horizon is just unweathered bedrock.

What are some of the differences that you can observe in soil? The soil particles have different sizes, therefore, soil has different textures. Soils can be moist or dry. They can form in thick layers or in thin layers. Soils may differ in color because of the minerals and the amount of humus they contain.

How might desert soil and forest soil be alike? Different? Both are made of sediment particles of different sizes as well as humus. Forest soil has more humus than desert soil has. Forest soil has darker color and more horizons than desert soil has.

Which type of fertilizer could probably produce humus: artificial or natural? Natural fertilizer could produce humus. What makes up the largest part of soil? Sediment makes up the largest part of soil. What does not cause weathering? Magma does not cause weathering.
