America and its Foreign Policy 1865 to 1920 How did America expand beyond its borders America and its Foreign Policy
America and its Foreign Policy After the civil war, America resumed its expansion. Industrialization helped the United States expand. There are several factors that led us to global involvement:
America and its Foreign Policy 1. A need for raw materials and resources 2. Racial Superiority- Our duty is to Christianize the “inferior people of the world” 3. A larger Navy gives us confidence, we can intimidate others 4. Manifest Destiny: A belief that the U.S. should own everything from coast to coast
Why else did we expand? We wanted to establish friendships and trade networks We were looking out for our best interests How do we continue to improve industrialization? Where do we begin?
We moved West We started to look West from the California coast We wanted to increase our power in the Pacific Ocean Our first step, turning the Hawaiian Islands into an American territory. They became American citizens We then added the Philippine Islands We were moving toward the far east
We focus now on China In 1899, Secretary of State John Hay offered a new trading policy for China Called the “Open Door Policy” Hay convinced foreign nations in China to allow open and free trade for all countries
What was the Boxer Rebellion? 1900 The Chinese were angry that foreigners were taking over Clubs were formed to move foreigners out of China, became known as “Boxers” The Boxers rebelled against their gov’t (they did not like the new trade and western influence) and the countries sent troops to protect their interests
What region is next? Hawaii, the Philippines and China were just the beginning We have moved from the Pacific area to the area south of the United States, the West Indies
