Academic Advising

ADVISING – PRESCRIPTIVE OR DEVELOPMENTAL? ADAPTED FROM RESOURCES FOUND ON THE NACADA WEBSITE: http://www.nacada.ksu.edu/Clearinghouse

Prescriptive advising Purpose of advisor is to provide accurate information in an efficient manner. Focus only on retention (what courses to take and in what order). View courses to be passed and gotten out of the way.

Developmental advising Views the student as a person who can use help with problem- solving and decision-making skills. Challenge students to develop higher-order thought processes. Help the student to gain clear insight into their own goals. Help student to increase ability to make decisions on their own. Refer to Bloom’s taxonomy (in NACADA journal)

ADVISING: REALITY Realistically in our setting we will use both developmental and prescriptive advising. However, while we see the value in developmental advising you may find that you use more prescriptive advising skills especially during peak advising times.
