How did the U.S.’s foreign policy change in the 1890’s?

American Samoa, acquired in 1899 By the 1890’s, the U.S. shifted to a foreign policy of imperialism in order to acquire overseas lands. Wake Island, annexed in 1899 American Samoa, acquired in 1899 from Britain

The U.S. acquired these overseas lands mainly due to its need for raw materials and new markets.

In 1898, the U.S. annexed the island chain of Hawaii.

The U.S. acquired more overseas lands (from Spain) in 1898 when it defeated Spain in the Spanish-American War. Won from Spain the Philippine Islands Guam Puerto Rico exclusive rights to Cuba X X X X X = Won from Spain in 1898.
