Evaluating Henry’s Foreign Policy L.O. to assess the success of Henry’s FP by planning a 25 mark essay. Key words: Balance of power = keeping the peace in Europe by making sure both sides are equally strong.

What criteria do we use to judge the success of a leader? Did they establish economic security? Can they ensure the security of their people? Can they maintain good relations with neighbouring powers? Do they encourage trade? Create social cohesion through religion Create social hierarchy Ensure that the leader has political support.

Henry’s Aims in FP? Glory! Trade with the Netherlands Glory! To dominate Euorpean affairs Henry’s Aims in FP? Be on good relations with Francis I and Charles V - maintining a balance of power.

Success Failure In the ST the success of Henry’s proposed betrothal to Anne of Cleaves and the consequential alliance with German princes. Military success in Scotland in 1542. Scotland is fundamentally weakened. Henry’s alliance with the Hapsburg empire (Charles V) Henry’s subjucation of Ireland. Established royal authority over Ireland. A centralised, Monarchical state created. Henry prevented Scot-Franco alliance (but at great expense). Secured the Tudor dynasty against foreign invavsion through the syoring of Edward. Henry and England was excommunicated from the Catholic church. Financially Henry spent his father’s inheritance on costly wars. Henry squandered the financial gains that he made from the sale of monastic lands. France and Scotland united against England 1540 -47 Along with the rest of Christendom England failed to check the expansion of the Ottomans. Marriage to Anne of Cleaves failed. This meant tha tHenry failed to cement an alliance with Protestant German princes. Treaty of Greenwich – The proposed marriage of Edward to Mary Queen of Scots failed. The succession occurred when Edward was young and resulted in a Regency government.
