TOPIC: What would you do if… MT 16, Human Genetics Disorders Just Tues 03.26.13 TOPIC: MY GOAL: Just Somethin to think about… What would you do if… I will… differentiate between a karyotype & a pedigree  finish my ‘baby’ you knew you were going to have a child with a genetic disorder…. The disorder may be physical, mental or both…..What would you do???

POLYGENIC INHERITANCE

Poly = many, Genic = genes When a single trait is controlled by 2 or more alleles Most human traits Hair color skin color eye color height

KARYOTYPE

KARYOTYPE 46 xsomes: 2 are sex xsomes: 1pr: XX or XY 44 are autosomes egg - X or X sperm - X or Y X X X Y Sperm determines sex of the offspring

REVIEW: Karyotype - Male or female? - Normal or abnormal?

REVIEW: - What indicates this is a male. - Normal or abnormal REVIEW: - What indicates this is a male? - Normal or abnormal? - How many PAIRS of xsomes do we have?

PEDIGREE

PEDIGREE; Which symbol represents Males? Females? Since it is unethical to use humans as test subjects, and it would take too long to get results anyway, one of the best ways to study human patterns of inheritance is to go back in time Which symbol represents Males? Females? Which are the oldest? Youngest? How many generations? What does the shaded symbol mean? How many children did II-7 & 8 have? How many children did I-1 & 2 have? If III-1 produced a child, what is the chance she will produce a child who is affected? Squares Circles Left Right III Genetically Affected Four Five 50% if husband hetero – 0% if he is homozygous 9

Finish your baby!
