Adding and Subtracting Integers. RULE #1: Same Signs!! When you’re adding two numbers with the same sign, just ignore the signs! Add them like normal!
2.1 Integers & Absolute Value 2.2 Adding Integers.
 Two Rules: 1. To add numbers with the same sign, ADD the absolute values and the answer has the same sign as the original numbers.  EXAMPLE:

NO CALCULATORS!!!!!!!.  Integers are the whole numbers and their opposites (no decimal values!)  Example: -3 is an integer  Example: 4 is an integer.
Adding Integers. Adding Integers with the Same Sign Add the absolute values. The sum will have the same sign as the addends. Example 1 Find –2 + (-3)
INTEGERS: adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing

Rational Number Operations NOTES Let’s start with adding and subtracting integers What do you remember??

Adding Integers Original Problem: -9 + -5 = (-) After Rule: 9 + 5 = (-) After Rule: 9 + 5 = (+) Answer: -14 Answer: (+) 14 Original Problem: -8 + -7 = (-) Original Problem: -2 + -7 = (-) After Rule: 8 + 7 = (-) After Rule: 2 + 7 = (-) Answer: -15 Answer: -9 Rule #1- The signs are the same so I just add and keep the sign.

Adding Integers Original Problem: 9 + -5 = (+) After Rule: 9 - 5 = (+) After Rule: 9 - 5 = (-) Answer: (+) 4 Answer: -4 Original Problem: -8 + 7 = (-) Original Problem: -2 + 7 = (+) After Rule: 8 - 7 = (-) After Rule: 7 – 2 = (+) Answer: -1 Answer: (+) 5 Rule #2- The signs are different so I just subtract and keep the sign of the larger number.

Subtracting Integers Original Problem: 9 – (-5) = After Rule: 9 + 5 = (+) After Rule: -9 + -5 = (-) Answer: (+) 14 Answer: -14 Original Problem: -8 – (-7) = Original Problem: 2 - 7 = After Rule: -8 + 7 = (-) After Rule: 2 + -7 = (-) Answer: -1 Answer: -5 Rule : No matter the signs, I am going to add the opposite. Once I change the problem to addition, I follow the addition rules.

Write an answer on your whiteboard and do not turn over until I ask 14 – 16 = 72 + – 9 –120 + 85 = –84 – (– 16) = 53 – (–7) = –45 + – 8 =

Adding and Subtracting Decimals

Rules Do the rules change if we move to adding and subtracting decimals? Adding Rules Same sign- add and keep the sign Different sign- subtract and keep the sign of the larger number Subtraction rule Add the opposite

Adding Decimals Original Problem: -4.2 + -9.63= (-) After Rule: -4.20 + -9.63 = (-) After Rule: 9.45 – 3.00 = (-) Answer: -6.45 Answer: -13.83 Original Problem: -8.89 + 14.2 = (+) Original Problem: 2.1 + -9.4= (-) After Rule: 14.2 – 8.89 = (+) After Rule: 9.4 – 2.1 = (-) Answer: (+) 5.31 Answer: -7.3 Make sure the decimals line up! If there is an empty spot I put a zero to make sure all number have the same place value Rule #1- The signs are the same so I just add and keep the sign. Rule #2- The signs are different so I just subtract and keep the sign of the larger number.

Subtracting Decimals Original Problem: -0.4 – 0.23= After Rule: -0.4 + -0.23 = (-) After Rule: -9.45 + -3.00 = (-) Answer: -12.45 Answer: -0.63 Original Problem: -8.89 – (-14.2) = Original Problem: 2.1 – (-9.4) = After Rule: -8.89 + 14.2 = (+) After Rule: 2.1 + 9.4 = (+) Answer: (+) 5.31 Answer: (+) 11.5 Make sure the decimals line up! If there is an empty spot I put a zero to make sure all number have the same place value Rule : No matter the signs, I am going to add the opposite. Once I change the problem to addition, I follow the addition rules.
