YEAR 1 Term 5&6 Pirates beware! LEARNING LINKS: What will be at explored, achieved, discussed and learned in our class this term? SCIENCE AND ICT HUMANITIES (History, Geography, RE) PE AND PSHE Science (Materials): Which materials sink or float? What materials are waterproof? Science (Seasons): What is the season? What changes have we noticed? What are the signs of Summer? Science (animals) What animals live under the sea? How do we care for them? ICT: (Programming) How do we program beebots? How can we add/edit/remove instructions? Can we program beebots to follow maps? PSHE: How do we stay safe at the beach? How do we protect ourselves from the sun? How do we stay safe in the water? How can we care for the ocean and its animals? PE: Athletics How can we throw over long/short distances with accuracy? How do we catch with control? How can we work effectively as a team? PE: Swimming Sports day Geography: What are the name of the oceans? What are the four points of the compass? History: Who was Bristol’s Blackbeard? What were pirate ships like? What was life like at sea? Visit the John Cabot ship in Bristol's harbour side. Set up your own obstacle course – use a stopwatch to record how quickly you can complete it. Create a beach/sun safety poster. YEAR 1 Term 5&6 Pirates beware! Books: The night pirates, Captain Flinn, How to be a pirate and The Pirates next door etc Do some research to find out about different sea creatures. Create an animal report! English MATHS Position and direction: Which is left/right/clockwise/anticlockwise? How much is a quarter/half/whole turn? How do I get to ____? Fractions What is a half/quarter? How many parts? How do I work out a half/quarter of an amount, shape or object? What is a double? Numbers to 100 What's the number before/after? What is one more/less? 10 more/less? Which is bigger/smaller? We will exploring lots of different text types: Pirate stories Postcards Instructions Poetry Reports CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT (Art, Music, Design technology) Art/DT: Pirate ships! Can we create a labelled design? What materials could we use? How do we join different materials? Music: Sea shanties! What is a round? How do we perform them? Don’t forget to read at least three times a week to get a gold coin for the reading rainbow. Create your own treasure map – write some instructions about how to get to the treasure. Create a sea scene picture. You could use paint, colouring pencils, pens or different materials. Use mathletics to practise your maths! Design your own pirate flag using 2D shapes. Practise counting forward and back starting on different numbers – count in 2s, 5s and 10s. Wear a watch to practise reading the time.
