Requirements In order to be enrolled into the BMS athletic program, each athlete must have the following: All Physical Forms completed via Rankonesports.com BMS Girls Athletic Contract https://whitesettlementisd.rankonesport.com/Main/Default2.aspx?Type =4 Hard Copy – Medical History & Examination Digital Copy – Pre-Participation Packet Tryout/Participate in one of the following sports: Cross Country, Volleyball, Tennis, Basketball, Track Dress out for athletics in Bear colors (Blue, white, Gray) until BMS Athletic Clothes arrive. Once they arrive, each athlete will be required to dress out in their athletic shirts.

BMS Philosophy of Athletics Middle School Enjoyable Experience Participation/School Spirit We want to be competitive. We believe that if a middle school student has a great experience with their friends, and learns the fundamentals of their respective sport, we have accomplished the most important foundational goals in building the total athletic program.

Discipline All athletes who serve in ISS are NOT eligible to participate in any form of athletics (practice or games) from the time they serve until the following day after completion. Major Offenses – Please refer to the Parent/Student Athlete Handbook. Student athletes will be held accountable not only during athletics, but also during and after the school day. They represent the Brewer Middle School Family wherever they go. Sport Rules – Each Sport will have their specific standards and will be covered during Parent Informative Meetings. **In cases of multiple athletes not meeting standards, group consequences will be administered, we are a team.

Grading Each athlete will start out with 100 points for each six weeks. If a student does not participate in the daily activity, and she does not have a 1 day parent letter or physician restriction, her overall grade will drop 5 points each day.- Academics All athletes will be expected to make a passing grade (above 70). Athletes who make below 70 at any 6 weeks grading report will NOT be eligible to participate in any athletic event. Furthermore, the coaching staff will push for excellence in all academic classes.

BMS Coaching Staff We are devoted to the development of your child, physically, mentally, socially and emotionally. We will be firm but fair. Coaches will do their very best to clearly communicate expectations and consequences. If we expect athletes to give 100% everyday, the coaches will give 100% as well each day.

Lockers Athletes will be assigned lockers. It will be the athletes responsibility to take care of their assigned locker and locker room, and keep it locked. We will do daily checks of the condition of the locker room. Athletes MUST take home and wash all clothes at least once a week.

Uniforms All BMS athletes will be issued athletic uniforms when available. They are expected to take care of and turn in all issued equipment. All uniforms not turned in will be charged to the athlete at the end of each season.

Sickness/Injury Any athlete who is injured during athletic care will be referred to the Brewer High School Athletic Trainers. Athletes must have a note for any sickness/injury that requires them to not participate. A parent note will work for 1 day. Anything longer than a day will require a note from a physician. Athletes are still expected to dress out unless the injury will not allow. Kimberly Tucker & Aaron Watson are our Athletic Trainers at the High School.

Non-Cut/Tryout Sport For Volleyball and Basketball, all players that make a team will be assigned to one of three teams, ABC, or (Blue, White and Gray). During each specific time period for tryouts, the coaching staff will evaluate the players, based on their skills. Once assigned to a team, athletes still have a chance to move up or down to one of the other two teams.

Practice/Game Schedule 8th Grade Practices in the morning will begin at 6:30AM and all athletes need to report no later then 6:15 AM. (Doors will open at 6:00 AM) 7th Grade Practices in afternoon until 4:45 PM. All schedules will be uploaded to RankOne. *7th grade parents please make sure your child is picked up by 5:00 at the latest. We have responsibilities we must get to ASAP.

Discipline/Expectations Be Accountable Be Respectful Be Responsible Be Honest Work Hard All of our players will be held accountable for the falling short of our expectations. Repeated offenders will be subject to meeting with the coordinator, possible probation, and possible removal from athletic program. Each parent and athlete will be required to comply with the athletic handbook.

Bad Weather/Practice We have a system in place for weather updated. In cases of rain with no lightning, the team may/may not practice outside. Athletes should ALWAYS show up for morning practices no matter the weather, unless safety is in question. Parents, please sign up for the Remind 101 using the instructions on our website.

Transportation All athletes will ride to and from all athletic events that take place away from BMS. In order to ride home with a parent/guardian or an adult designated by the parent, we must have a Travel Release Form on file. NO EXCEPTIONS.

Athlete to Coach Communication Our Coaching staff has an open door policy with all of our athletes. We are OPEN and HONEST with our communication with students and parents. We do not want to be blindsided about a situation that occurred days ago. We want our athletes to be comfortable in discussing things with us.

Volleyball Tryouts 7th Grade 7th grade tryouts begin Tuesday, August 23  (beginning during the athletic period which will be 7th period, ending at 5:00 PM) Tryouts will continue at the same times for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (time might change for Friday). Teams will be decided and posted outside on the gym door by 5:15PM Friday.

Volleyball Tryouts 8th Grade 8th grade tryouts begin Tuesday, August 23 from 6:30-8:30AM (ending during the athletic period which will be 1st period). Athletes need to report at 6:15am every morning to ensure the nets are fully set up and that tryout numbers can be assigned to each athlete. Tryouts will continue at 6:15am am for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Teams will be decided and posted by the end of school on Friday.

Lady Bears Volleyball For those athletes who make a volleyball team, there will be a parent informational meeting within the first two weeks of school. Games will be played on Thursday nights, except tournaments which will be on Saturdays. Athletes who make a team will also need to bring a journal and folder to practice. Please contact Coach Chastain if you have any other questions. mchastain@wsisd.net

What if my child doesn’t make a team? If your child does not make one of the teams, they will continue to stay in the athletic period. During Off-Season, they will continue to workout every day, with goals of getting stronger, faster and quicker to prepare for the next upcoming sport.

Tennis Tennis will begin the week after volleyball tryouts Tennis Tennis will begin the week after volleyball tryouts. Tennis practice will be after school and end between 5:15 -5:30 PM

Cross Country Cross Country tryouts for boys and girls will begin Monday, August 29th. Practices will be at 6:45 AM for both 7th and 8th graders. Athletes that are not in the athletic period will still have time to change and get ready for their first period.

Parent Involvement Please support the players and coaches on and off the field or court. A proper diet needs to be established at home. Limit the foods that provide little or no nutritional value. Proper hydration is very important. Behavior at games. Please leave the officials alone. If you are removed from a game there are consequences. Parent UIL Manual is available on the BMS athletic website.

Go Lady Bears!
