CS 522: Human-Computer Interaction Lab: Usability Testing Dr. Debaleena Chattopadhyay Department of Computer Science debchatt@uic.edu debaleena.com

Summative evaluation Evaluating a complete or almost complete system, that can be realistically used to determine if the design requirements were met and asses the user experience.

Summative evaluation methods User testing (measure user experience) Controlled experiments In-the-wild study Contextual Inquiry Think aloud protocol A/B testing Survey Interviews ..... Many more

Commonly used tools Morae Recorder Camtasia System Usability Scale survey NASA TLX scale (workload measurement) Eye tracking Logging

Lab: Speed Testing [20 + 20mins] 2 sessions: A user and tester Choose one of the following applications for testing. Familiarize yourself with the app, and define 3 tasks core to the app. [10 mins] If you’re a tester, find a user to carry out the tasks. Measure time on task, task success, number of errors, user satisfaction (aka user experience). [10 mins] I’ll randomly choose 2 testers to share findings with the class. [10 minutes] Alternate your role, and repeat.

Possible applications SAGE UI CTA Transit Stop Instacart NPR one March for Science website UIC Campus recreation inbox.google.com cso.org https://www.rush.edu/ Or choose your own app/website

To do: Dec 5 & 7: Final project presentations (functional prototype required, show demo or video) Webpage + code repo due by 11:59 PM CST 12/7 In your presentations, you must specify member contributions in prototype implementation. No “all members equally participated”. Not providing this information will incur grade penalty. Submit peer and self evaluation by 12/7. Fill in the forms, print, and hand it to me in person. (Do not discuss responses with peers.) Required.
