Why Do We Have Phases of the Moon?
Phases of the Moon Standard 1 Students will understand that the appearance of the moon changes in a predictable cycle as it orbits Earth and as Earth rotates.
Moon Phases.  Exactly one half of the moon is normally lit by the sun.  As the moon orbits Earth we see different amounts of the half that is lit by.

Presentation transcript:

Lesson 0145 Learning Goal: (You should be able to…) Explain the moon’s phases : (Can you …) Make a model of them! Record it?

Write to Think 145 Which moon phase comes next after a new moon? What is the phase at day 14 in the revolution of the moon? Draw what the moon will look like from the Earth when it is a waning gibbous shape. Why is it called a ‘full moon’?

1. Waxing crescent 2. Full moon 3. Waning gibbous

Model it Experiment with partner … what do you need? How to get it to represent the moons phases? Rotation? Revolution? Each phase … how many phases? Shadow? When and where are they? Time? Other?

Things I’m looking for … Patience (we have a limited amount of space!) Accurate modelling of what you have on your THREE handouts. Both persons working on the demonstration. Practice the names, order, HOW and WHY it’s happening! Completing the TWO NEW handouts

End of Lesson

In the real thing there is only one moon, Earth and sun. In the demo you have to compete with other people for sunlight Competition

Ancient calendars Stonehenge in Great Britain (1500 BC) marks the direction in which the sun rises and sets on the longest period of daylight of the year. Chinese astronomers 1300 BC first to calculate the correct length of a year (365.25 days) The Mayans devised a calendar with 365.25 days.
