assignment Your assignment is to create a three-dimensional artistic representation of your culture and compose a written text that explains the significance of two of the symbols you have chosen to represent yourself.

Explain: to make plain and comprehensible; to offer reasons for, to justify significance: worthy of attention; importance symbol: concrete, material object representing something abstract Unpack the prompt -- deconstruct

Basic Expository essay Structure Activate prior knowledge quickly. Display anchor chart with basic essay framework with no labels or words. Ask students to copy the essay frame into interactive notebook and to discuss possibilities with partner. Teacher should listen for key terms: Introduction, body paragraphs, conclusion, thesis statement, topic sentences, evidence, etc. Ask for volunteers to discuss the framework. Then, display the image to review common language.

Specific essay requirements Focuses on two symbols (one per body paragraph) How do they represent your culture? Why did you chose the art medium used? Color – shape – texture Did you anticipate viewers’ questions? Evidence of all stages of the writing process

Paper format Hand WRITTEN: front side only, blue or black ink, original title, and mla heading Typed: 12-point times new roman, double spaced, original title, and mla heading printed or emailed to jperry1@saisd.net
