BRYAN YOUNG Preventative Maintenance Working With Safety

Safety is the state of being safe, the condition of being protected against physical, social, emotional, occupational, or other types of consequences of failure, damage, error, accidents, harm or any other event which could be considered non- desirable. Safety can also be defined to be the control of recognized hazards to achieve an acceptable level of risk. This can take the form of being protected from the event or from exposure to something that causes health or economical losses. It can include protection of people or of possessions.

The care and servicing by personnel for the purpose of maintaining equipment and facilities in satisfactory operating condition by providing for systematic inspection, detection, and correction of incipient failures either before they occur or before they develop into major defects.

Major: Prominent or significant in size, amount, or degree. Defects: an imperfection that impairs worth or utility.

Maintenance, including tests, measurements, adjustments, and parts replacement, performed specifically to prevent faults from occurring.

Typically, the CMMS schedules preventive maintenance automatically based on maintenance plans and/or meter readings. Different software packages use different techniques for reporting when a job should be performed. There are many company out there with program for purchase, CyberMetrics, MicroMain, BigFoot, etc.

Work Orders- Scheduling jobs, assigning personnel, reserving materials, recording costs, and tracking relevant information such as the cause of the problem (if any). Asset Management- Recording data about equipment and property including maintenance activities, specifications, purchase date, expected lifetime, warranty information. Spare parts. Inventory Control-Management of spare parts, tools and other materials including the reservation of materials for particular jobs. Safety-Management of permits and other documentation required for the processing of safety requirements. These safety requirements can include Lockout-Tagout (Lockout- Tryout), confined space, electrical safety, and others.

Preventive maintenance, commonly referred to as PM, is not just important for efficiency; it is critical for employee protection. A fully staffed and totally competent maintenance staff is a necessity. Maintenance personnel play a key role in ensuring the safe operation of all equipment, as well as the safety of team members and your facility.

Safety should by your number one priority with your team members and with the preventive maintenance, you can maintain your machines so they will be safe for your team members to work around.
