In all coast towns of Israel, moving along the coast means you advance north or south. But driving from Carmel beach towards the port, you actually turn 135 degrees. This wicked mount Carmel and the gulf of Haifa! בכל ערי החוף בישראל, כשמתקדמים לאורך הים הולכים צפונה או דרומה. כשנעים לאורך הים בחיפה מחוף הכרמל לאזור הנמל מגלים שבלי להרגיש עושים תפנית של כ-135 מעלות. והכל בגלל רכס הכרמל שנשפך לים ויצר את המפרץ. תוסיפו לזה את השכונות ההרריות, הואדיות המבתרים את העיר, והכבישים המתפתלים בכל מקום, ותקבלו עיר שאינה מובנת מאליה כלל וכלל, ויוצרת אנטגוניזם בקרב מי שאינו מכיר אותה. Add the mountainous residential areas, the creeks dissecting the city, the meandering roads, and get a city which is far from “straight forward”, literally…

מאה מטר מעל מפלס האוניברסיטה, ולמעלה מחמש מאות מטרים מעל פני הים, שוכנת אחת מנקודות התצפית המשובחות בישראל – התצפית מקומה 30 של מגדל אשכול. חוץ מנוף לחרמון בצפון וגוש-דן בדרום, התצפית הזאת היא המקום שבו כדאי לפתוח את הסיור בחיפה, כי כאן אפשר לעשות סדר בכיוונים ולהתחיל להבין "מי נגד מי". 500 meters above sea level, on Eshkol Tower’s 30th floor, resides one of the best viewpoints in Israel. Except for views to Mt. Hermon in the north and Tel Aviv in the south, it’s the best place to start a tour in Haifa and get oriented.

Haifa is soaked in dazzling green, like I haven’t seen anywhere in Israel nor even in some famous cities abroad. חיפה טובלת בירוק בכמות שלא רואים כמוה לא רק בארץ, אלא אפילו בערים "נחשבות" בעולם.

Houses and buildings owners are inspired by the urban nature and demonstrate superb gardening skills. Sometimes I feel that I am strolling in a Moshav or a Kibbutz rather than in a big city…
