ATLS 10th Edition Beta Pilot 4th – 5th May 2017 A Co-Ordinators View Robert Colson Clinical Skills & Simulation Co-Ordinator St. George’s Advanced Patient Simulation & Skills Centre

Aims of the Presentation Differences between the 9th & 10th edition programme Setup / Layout & Change Overs Extra Equipment Q & A Briefly run through each point as they will be expanded on later in the presentation

Programme Differences 2 Day Course instead of 3 Day Course More time set aside for Q&A and discussions Introduction to Skills Stations Airway Stations (groups do not rotate) Shorter change over times Moulage & MCQ’s start later (issue when they break for lunch) 2 Day Course – just to remind them that the course is changing from three to two days (less lectures) Q&A / Discussions - due to there being no lectures as before this has allowed more sessions built in for Q&A and discussions with candidates) Into to Skills Stations – Once again due to the lectures being cut out, before the skills stations there is short session briefing the candidates about the stations Airway Stations – In the 9th edition the groups rotated on these stations on the 10th edition they do not which meant that the change over from Basic & Advanced to Surgical & Paed was tight. If abasic & advanced was together in one room (with 2 groups) and one room was set up for Paed Airway and another for surgical airway then their would be no need for rush in change overs on this stations. Change Over’s – In general shorter change over times (how can this be managed) prepping all the station equipment in advance and having it in the rooms, to minimise time taking for clearing down and setting up. Moulage & MCQ’s - group’s mixing?? Next slide – Airway Layout

Extra Equipment Extra Adult Airway Heads (4 required) Paediatric Airway Heads (4 required) Lambs leg with groin area 4 x Tourniquets Adult Airway Heads – Some centres may well have only two adult intubation models, so they may need to think about ordering or borrowing 2 more airway heads. Paediatric Airway Heads – So we had one Paed airway head, one paediatric airway manikin (that could be intubated), the RCS bought along an paed manikin that could be intubated and Limbs & Things kindly sent us one via courier to use on the course. When we come to running the new version of the course we will be looking at purchasing more paediatric airway models. Lambs Legs – Our Fresh Tissue supplier sent as the Lambs Legs with Groin areas – but it came as a complete (rear end of a sheep) so I had to cut through the tissue with a scalpel and then use a hammer and chisel to cut through the bone (when ordering ask them to send it as two separate legs) Tourniquets – Ideally you should have 4 tourniquets for the new course – we have one in the centre, so will we need to order more for the new edition.
