Escape Room Ben Leung American International School Hong Kong bleung@ais.edu.hk

What is an escape room? You voluntarily get locked to put yourself into a situation where you must break out sherlock holmes style by solving problems and puzzles.

Let’s watch a brief video

Some activity to poll the audience PLAY KAHOOT!

What can I take away? Inspiration STEAM FUN! Technology Science Art What I have done Music: compose background music, create sound effects Drama: dramatise videos for your escape room Art/Computer Design: create digital artwork for your escape room My Programmers/Computer Science students: writes the logic and the interface for the puzzles. Engineering Inspiration Math/Music STEAM FUN!

Overview of this presentation Introduction How it all started What I am doing now What I plan to do in the future Constructive input Resources for you

How it all started

How it all started My admins wanted teachers to collaborate! I have always wanted to collaborate and create an “All AIS project” Looking for a big project idea to engage my students throughout the year.

How it all started My admins wanted teachers to collaborate! I have always wanted to collaborate and create an “All AIS project” Looking for a big project idea to engage my students throughout the year.

How it all started Semester 1 Semester 2 Semester 3 How my school works 3 Semesters in the school year 2 Progress Reports and 1 Final Report What I wanted 3 Major assessments at the conclusion of each semester The Escape Room idea leads nicely into having 3 assessments. One per trimester Project 1: A Project where students are able to navigate through varying canvases Project 2: A Project where students can build on their previous work and add additional interactions like clicking on objects Project 3: Creating solvable puzzles and enhancing the overall play experience of the escape Semester 2 Semester 3

What my students are developing Can you figure out the combination?

What my students are developing

One of my biggest desire was to have students work on a project cycle where they revisit and further develop their previous projects. Project 1: A Project where students are able to navigate through varying canvases Project 2: A Project where students can build on their previous work and add additional interactions like clicking on objects Project 3: Creating solvable puzzles and enhancing the overall play experience of the escape

Explore Here are some of the projects my students are working on Sounds and collecting objects Special UV Light Escape from the timed bomb Erase the letters puzzle

2. Collaboration Computer Programming Computer Design Music Drama Collaborating with: Computer Design Produce artwork for the project including art pieces for the escape room using sketchup and photoshopping title pages Music Designing background music and sound effects Drama Creating scripted videos to draw the audience into the escape room narrative.

2. Interesting Problems I encountered I need to learn more about Game Design! Specifically Puzzle Design Encourage students to think outside the box.

2. Encouraging students to think outside the box Most students think about numbers when they think about puzzles because they were exposed to numerical locks.

2. Encouraging students to think outside the box A simple push switch lock done interesting.

Let’s play Escape Room! 10 - 15 min activity!

Additional Thoughts for collaboration Physics/Engineering 3D printer Unity Short Story Physics/Engineering students: can attempt to create some of the escape room puzzles. Some of them will be challenging! 3D print the escape room as a highlight Use Unity and create a virtual world with interactive characters English students could create a narrative as the theme of the escape room Humanities students could take a real piece of history as write that as a narrative for the theme of escape rooms.
