MSR WhisperLite Stove The following is an example of one method of completing a PowerPoint presentation for Unit 30 Task 1

In order to complete the task you will need to include Description of stove – what it does and who produces it Development of camping stoves What fuels are used? Why? History of MSR Various parts of MSR Benefits and downsides Service and guarantee Where can it be bought

MSR WhisperLite Stove MSR – Mountain Safety Research's Whisperlite stove is one of the most versatile stoves on sale today Cost approx £ / /

MSR WhisperLite Stove - What is it? The WhisperLite, as it is normally referred to is one of the most popular fuel stoves amongst professional and outdoor users. It uses a wide variety of liquid fuel; petrol; meths; coleman fuel; therefore you should be able to find fuel for it in all parts of the world. It packs down to a relatively small space It can be kept transported in pans It only weighs 330grams It boils a litre of water in 3 ½ mins It can be serviced by a competent user It has an unique shaker self cleaning system It has 3 legs that makes it stable on a uneven surface Service Kit

MSR WhisperLite Stove - development of camping stoves? Man has always used heat to cook – early man used open fires Primus company of Sweden developed the first fuel stove in the 1890s. A Primus stove was used by Shackleton. First MSR stove Model 9 developed in

MSR WhisperLite Stove - Fuels The WhisperLite can use a variety of fuels. It will work with a wide variety of oil based fuel including diesel, it can run on unleaded petrol or Coleman fuel and paraffin. For efficient performance only the cleanest fuels should be used. Coleman fuel heats the water to the boil fastest followed by petrol Petrol and diesel are wildly available but are very dirty fuels so the burner will clog up quickly Time taken to boil 1 litre of water Coleman fuel 3.5 minutes Petrol 4.4 minutes

MSR WhisperLite Stove - History of the MSR Company 1971 company established - designed self inflating mattress 1973 First fuel stove 2007 First fuel stove to use radiant heat 1984 Introduce WhisperLite stove

MSR WhisperLite Stove - Benefits and drawbacks Benefits Tough Fuel available worldwide Burns very hot Boils quickly Packs away relatively small Can be used at altitude Easily available spares Can be serviced by owner MSR Shaker cleaning system Drawbacks Expensive Fuel bottle takes a lot of room Can soot up if petrol is used Legs not the most stable

The WhisperLite comes with its own shaker cleaning system. By shaking the stove a little pricker cleans the fuel jet nozzle to allow the vapour to pass effectively. If this does not work the user can strip the stove and service it them selves. Cleaning is normally needed if there is a build up of soot that blocks the vapour nozzle. Spare parts can be bought almost anywhere in the world. The stove comes with the standard 12 months warranty A collection of spares and tools MSR WhisperLite Stove - Servicing and spares

MSR WhisperLite Stove - testing Any stove should be examined before and after use, this is especially true if the equipment is used by a group of people e.g. Outdoor Centre. If in doubt about the performance the stove it should be referred to someone more qualified and if that person is not available it SHOULD NOT be used What to check? Secure fitting fuel lines (no leakage) Stable legs and arms Secure fuel stopper No sooting No abnormal hissing after priming stove (pumping bottle) No fuel leaks after priming Fuel line; no cracks or leaks Adjusting handle is secure and working Fuel line assembly is complete IF IN DOUBT DO NOT USE

MSR WhisperLite Stove - Where can you buy it? The WhisperLite is freely available in the UK from large multinational Outdoor shops to small independent retailers. It can be bought online as-well.
