Lesson link What is efficiency?

Draw a line under last lesson’s work and write today’s title in your book... 26/11/2018 c/w Features of Waves

Describe the difference between transverse and longitudinal Learning Objectives Developing Recall that waves transfer energy without transferring matter Securing Define and use the terms wavelength, amplitude, frequency, period and wave velocity Exceeding Describe the difference between transverse and longitudinal

Engage Under the title of ‘wave examples’ name as many types of wave that you can think of

Watch the demo/discussion. What is being transferred in both examples Watch the demo/discussion. What is being transferred in both examples? Complete and fill in the following paragraph When a ball is thrown, both ________and _________are transferred to the other person. However, when the other person is spoken to, only ________ is transferred. This is because sound travels in _______ and these are only able to transfer ________.

Transverse = “Perpendicular” There are two types of wave. TRANSVERSE waves and LONGITUDINAL waves When describing them, be specific! The definitions share a common phrase, they only differ with a single word! A wave in which the vibrations of the wave move ________ to the wave direction Transverse = “Perpendicular” Longitudinal = “Parallel” Write the definition for each wave, placing the relevant word in the gap!

In pairs discuss other examples of transverse waves. “ A wave in which the vibrations move perpendicular to the wave direction” Following the demonstration, provide an example of a transverse wave and explain how it represents one In pairs discuss other examples of transverse waves. Vibrations Wave Direction ransverse

Longitudinal = Parallel Longitudinal Waves “ A wave in which the vibrations move parallel to the wave direction” Following the demonstration, provide an example of a transverse wave and explain how it represents one In pairs discuss other examples of longitudinal waves Longitudinal = Parallel

Wave pop quiz! Round 1: Easy Round 2: Medium Frequency Amplitude Define the following words Pitch Volume Oscillation Match the scientific phrases with a definition. Write them in your notes Round 2: Medium Frequency The maximum displacement (height) of a wave. It is the loudness of a wave Amplitude The time taken for one complete oscillation Wave Velocity The number of waves per second. It is the pitch of a wave Period The speed with a direction that the wave travels at Round 3: Hard Pick a musical instrument and explain how you could change the frequency and amplitude of the sound!

Explain: wave properties Crest Wavelength Amplitude Trough Lower Frequency Waves can be visualised using an oscilloscope. Draw the wave trace above as neatly as possible. Label the properties shown Higher Frequency

Explain: wave properties Crest Wavelength Amplitude Trough Task 1: Label the time period and frequency of the wave Task 2: Draw a wave with a) a higher frequency and b) a lower frequency Task 3: Draw a a) louder wave and b) a quieter wave

Explain The speed of a wave is calculated by: Speed = distance time   v = x t   Distance must be in m Time must be in s Speed will be in m/s If a wave carries a surfer 120m in 60 seconds, what is the speed of the wave?

Extend The speed of a wave is ALSO calculated by: Speed  =  Frequency x  Wavelength   v = f x λ   A wave has a frequency of 2Hz and a wavelength of 8m, what is its speed? Frequency must be in Hz Wavelength must be in m. Speed will be in m/s A wave has a wavelength of 10m, and travels at 50m/s, what is its frequency?

Wave Practice Complete the worksheet “Wave Calculations” Complete the worksheet “All about Waves”

Exam Practice With use of examples describe the differences and similarities between transverse and longitudinal waves. 6 marks

Exam Corrections: With use of examples describe the differences and similarities between transverse and longitudinal waves. 6 marks Longitudinal and transverse waves both transfer energy without transferring matter. Longitudinal waves such as sound waves, have their vibrations moving parallel to the wave direction whereas transverse waves (such as light) have their vibrations move perpendicular to the wave direction. Longitudinal waves need particles to move so cannot travel in a vacuum.

Describe the difference between transverse and longitudinal Learning Objectives Developing Recall that waves transfer energy without transferring matter Securing Define and use the terms wavelength, amplitude, frequency, period and wave velocity Exceeding Describe the difference between transverse and longitudinal
