Do Now Take out paper for notes today! Take out your homework (unless you shared it with me) In a community, what are some ways 2 species can interact with each other? Write them down on your paper.

Announcements Unit 5 Evolution Retakes: (THIS IS THE LAST WEEK) M- until 3:30 Tuesday- until 4 Thursday- until 4:30 Friday- morning Study halls, Seminars

Interactions Fish are friends, not food! Interaction: A situation where two species affect each other

Background Terms- Community Level

Autotroph vs. Heterotroph Troph = energy Autotroph = organisms that make their own food Heterotroph = organisms that eat other organisms for food

Key Terms Primary producer: The organisms that produce organic compounds (like sugars) from inorganic substances (like gases) Who? Plants and algae Primary consumer: The individuals that eat the plants Who? Herbivores Secondary consumer: Eat the primary consumers Tertiary consumer: Eat mostly secondary consumers (but can eat from any level)

Key Terms- Consumers Decomposers: Organisms that eat plants Omnivore Herbivore Organisms that eat plants Omnivore Organisms that eat anything Carnivore Organisms that eat meat Decomposers: Organisms that break down dead matter (ex: mushrooms)

Key Terms Prey: an animal that is hunted and eaten for food Predator: animal doing the hunting

Key Terms Parasite: an organism that lives in or on another organism (its host) and benefits by getting nutrients at the host's expense.

Interaction Skits There are 5 main ways that 2 species can interact. Each group will have 10 minutes to prepare a skit showing how the two species interact, and then the class will have to guess HOW they are interacting. The group will then go over the vocabulary term associated with their interaction. Guidelines: Each person MUST play a role in the skit You cannot say the word of your interaction Each person MUST be able to explain your term

Identify the following!
