MODS

Social Context In the early 1950s, Queen Elizabeth II reigned in the UK while Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister. At the time, there were good conditions for working class youths. In the 1960s, there was massive immigration from the West Indies, India and Pakistan. Riots took place in the South with Rockers. There was a lot of racial prejucide and violence during this period such as the Notting Hill riots. The Notting Hill riots in 1976

Origins Mods appeared in the early 1960s in new towns in the South of England. They originated from working class backgrounds and they were white youths. The name "Mods" was a shorter name for the word "Modernists" as a reference to modern jazz. Mods were a symbol of deliquency in the British media. They were inspired by Beatniks and Teddy Boys. Appearance They were stylish and wore sophisticated suits. Fashion was an obsession for them. In fact, they liked wearing French and modern Italian clothes. Boys liked drainpipes trousers, thin ties, and V-neck jumpers. Besides, they wore military parkas and bowling shoes. Mods' appearance

Way of Life Modernists drove scooters such as Vespas and Lambrettas. They liked going to night clubs to dance. Besides, they liked going shopping in Carnaby street. Music In the 1950s, they listened to modern jazz like Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters Dave Brudeck. However, in the 1960s, they were fond of listening to Ska music.
