Adjectives and Adverbs

Adjectives (adj) Def: describes/modifies (changes) a noun or pronoun E.g. fluffy cat, pretty girl, the ugly caterpillar Includes a, an, and the Predicate adjectives (PA): Follows a form of “be” Similar to a PN, but it’s an adj. E.g., He is confusing; she is funny; penguins are adorable.

Adverbs (adv) Words that modify verbs, another adverb, or adjs. Often end in –ly Describe how a verb is done: Mark runs slowly. Mark runs very slowly. Answer the questions how, when, where, why, how often, or how much something happens Mark’s car is very fast. (How fast?) Yesterday, we went fishing (When?) We saw the fish there. (Where?) We went fishing to relax (Why?) We rarely went fishing. (How often?) We hardly caught anything. (How much?)

Practice p. 107 (Pre-Test) First part only: Underline adjs and draw arrows to what they modify Circle advs and draw arrows to what they modify. Label the nouns in every sentence (S, DO, IO, OP, POS or PN)
