Reminder of EFQM context EFQM Excellence Model Holistic approach to looking at an organisation Supports collaborative working 8 Fundamental Concepts + 9 Criteria RADAR

Fundamental Concepts of Excellence 26-Nov-18 Fundamental Concepts of Excellence 5

The 9 Criteria The 9 Box Model is probably the most recognised part of the EFQM Excellence Model. There are 5 Enablers on the left hand side and 4 Results on the right. There are lines between the boxes as the criteria cannot be viewed in isolation; each influences the others. At it’s simplest, the Model can be viewed as a cause and effect diagram. You do something in the Enablers side and measure the impact on the results side. Based on the impact, you learn, get creative, innovate and do something else different.

Leadership criteria Leaders develop the mission, vision, values and ethics and act as role models. Leaders define, monitor, review and drive the improvement of the organisation’s management system and performance. Leaders engage with external stakeholders. Leaders reinforce a culture of excellence with the organisation’s people. Leaders ensure that the organisation is flexible and manages change effectively

Strategy criteria Strategy is based on understanding the needs and expectations of both stakeholders and the external environment. Strategy is based on understanding internal performance and capabilities. Strategy and supporting policies are developed, reviewed and updated. Strategy and supporting policies are communicated, implemented and monitored.

RADAR Logic Define the RESULTS you want to achieve Develop the APPROACHES that will deliver these results ASSESS the impact and REFINE based on analysis and learning Systematically DEPLOY the approaches

Scottish Government – strategic context TSIs 4 Core functions Common outcomes Common values

4 core functions Volunteering Development Supporting and developing a strong third sector Social Enterprise development Representing the Third Sector

Common outcomes 1a. More people have increased opportunity and enthusiasm to volunteer 1b. Volunteer involving organisations are better able to recruit, manage and retain volunteers 2. Social enterprise develops and grows 3. Third sector organisations are well manged and deliver quality services 4. Third sector organisations feel better connected and are able to influence and contribute to public policy 5. The Third Sector Interface is well managed and effective

Common values Leadership We are confident in, enthusiastic about and proud of the contribution that third sector organisations and volunteers make to Scotland’s communities. We will lead by example so that our work will have a positive impact. Collaboration We believe that the third sector is strongest when it works together and that its future will be shaped through collaborative working. This will be key to the way we work. Integrity We aim to be ethical, honest and open in the way we work and use time, money and resources effectively.

Common values (cont’d) Diversity We value the diversity of the third sector and work in an impartial manner Equality We are committed to equalities, fairness and human rights for all and act in way which is inclusive of all of our community Excellence We will pursue excellence in all that we do, in order to provide the best possible support and leadership to the third sector

Scottish Government support Helen Webster, Head of Charity Law, Volunteering and Stakeholder Engagement Promoting the ‘interface’ in TSIs is helpful Re-emphasising ‘collaboration’ and collaborative working are increasingly important Sharing good practice across TSIs is helpful at all levels Empowering staff to take the lead and work collaboratively is vital

Involving board members Board members included in ‘People’, have a key role in ‘Leadership’ and ‘Strategy’ and can use ‘Results’ to inform governance decisions. VSN on Thursday 22nd February – Director of Governance and board member

Committed to Excellence – 3 EFQM-based topics Increasing collaborative working for the benefit of all stakeholders Partnerships and Results Increasing the use of Results (outcomes) to inform TSI plans and activities Strategy and Results Increasing use of RADAR to structure TSI activities and share learning and good practice Result/Approach/Deployment/Assessment & Refinement
