Every sentence has a base. This base may be compared to the framework of a building. It is that part of the sentence on which are suspended all other parts.
 The word complement comes from the Latin word complere which means “to fill up or complete”.  Complements COMPLETE the meaning of a verb.

LINKING VERBS

Linking Verbs and Predicate Words Linking verbs tell what the subject is or is like. A linking verb(always intransitive) connects the subject of a sentence with a noun or an adjective in the predicate. John McGraw was the manager. Linking Verb Predicate Noun/Nominative Subject

TRANSITIVE AND INTRANSITIVE VERBS

Transitive Verbs The quarterback throws the football. Transitive verbs have direct objects. Direct objects receive the action of a verb. It answers the question who? or what? after an action verb. The quarterback throws the football. Direct Object Action Verb what?

Verbs with Indirect Objects An indirect object answers the question to/for whom or to/for what an action is done. Action Verb Michael Jordan shows his teammates new shots. to whom? Indirect object what? Direct Object

Intransitive Verbs Sometimes an action verb does not have a direct object. Then the verb is intransitive. The singer sang well. In the above sentence, well does not answer the question who? or what?. Action Verb
