Presentation transcript:

Two Types of Elections Direct Election- -winners are chosen based on popular vote (citizens’ choice) Ex.- -referendums, Congressional Elections, city and county elections. 2. Indirect Election- -citizens vote for electors of their state who then in turn chooses candidate. Ex. - -presidential election -Written in the Constitution as a compromise. -Founding fathers did not believe people would be knowledgeable enough to make an informed vote. -Electors vote for presidential candidates. -Electors pledge support to the party’s nominees. -Democratic Electors get to vote if Democrat wins popular vote in the state and Republican Electors vote if Republican wins state. -Number of state electors depends on population.

Electors choose president. There are 538 electors. A candidate must get majority of 270 to become president. If there is a tie in electoral college, then the House of Representatives votes for president. Popular vote is not considered. Popular vote is how people voted.

**Voting is the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. **Once the election is called losing candidate gives concession statement and winner gives a victory statement.
