NOAA’s MISSION To observe, understand and predict atmospheric and ocean conditions; •To share that knowledge and information with others; and •To protect lives and property, empower the economy, and support homeland and national security. 

NOAA’s ARCTIC VISION NOAA envisions an Arctic where: Conservation, management, and use are based on sound science, and support healthy, productive, and resilient communities and ecosystems; The global implications of Arctic change are better understood and predicted. NOAA’s Arctic mission can be summarized as conservation, management, and science. The broader goal has always been to support healthy, productive, and resilient ecosystems and communities. NOAA has many interests and equities spread throughout the organization, that range from regulating fishing, to producing nautical charts, to basic observations to better understand weather and climate. We have put it all together in NOAA’s Arctic Team (often called Task Force). This team is responsible for executing the goals laid out in our Arctic Vision and Strategy, made public in 2011. *

MAJOR DRIVERS FOR NOAA’s WORK IN THE ARCTIC REGION Prioritization Criteria: Addresses critically emerging issues. Has National relevance. Supports federal, state, local partners and the US Chairmanship of the Arctic Council. Aligns with NOAA’s mission. Consistent with NOAA’s priorities and DOC Strategic Plan. Leverages partnerships & cross NOAA Line Office expertise & assets. Blue Economy Weather & Water Transportation & Economic Development NOAA released an Action Plan in 2013 to answer calls from constituents for more information on what we are doing in AK and the Arctic. The Action Plan provides an integrated overview of NOAA’s diverse Arctic programs and how these missions, products, and services support the goals set forth in the President’s National Strategy for the Arctic Region. The plan also provides linkages to other agency and interagency plans crafted with constituent input, to include the National Ocean Policy, the Interagency Arctic Research Policy Committee Five Year Research Plan, the Integrated Arctic Management Report, and the Arctic plan for the Committee on Marine Transportation System (CMTS). Finally the plan also contains an appendix listing more than 80 actions that NOAA will take in 2014 and 2015 to support our Arctic-related missions and mandates and to further our scientific understanding of the region. *
