Child Employment THE LAW HOW IT AFFECTS YOUNG PEOPLE WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

The Children and Young Persons Act 1998 & Your Local Authority Council Bye Laws 1999 Makes sure you are SAFE - aims to prevent accidents & injury to school pupils Makes sure EDUCATION comes first Gives spare time for leisure & rest

How old do I have to be to be allowed to work? You must be 13years There are slightly different rules when you reach 14yrs about the type of work you can do When you are 15yrs you may work longer hours

What times may I work? You may NOT work BEFORE 7am You may NOT work AFTER 7pm

When I am 13 or 14 years old I can work 2 hours on a School day 5 hours on a Saturday or week day during school holidays 2 hours on a Sunday max 12 hors in a term time week

What type of work can I do When I am 13yrs?

At 13yrs you may only choose a job from the list The yellow information leaflet has lists of the jobs you can and can’t do

What Jobs can I do? Deliver Newspapers Wear a Helmet Make sure your bike is roadworthy make sure an adult knows where you are and when you will return

What jobs can I do? Shop work Office work Work in a Hairdressers Wash cars by Hand Domestic work in Hotels & Care Homes Light Agricultural or gardening work (no machinery to be used) light work in Riding Stables

What jobs can I do? Work in a Café or Restaurant such as clearing tables, waiting at tables, washing up etc You may not work in a kitchen

You may not Work in Butchers Shops preparing Meat Undertake the personal care of residents in an old peoples home or similar Deliver fuel Undertake any work which involves the use of Machinery Undertake any Factory work

You must have an Employment Card It is a legal requirement to have a work permit - Employment Card You must show this to the Child Employment Officer, or a Police Officer if asked.

What if I don’t have an Employment Card? Ask your Employer or Pick up a form from the school or Ring Your Local Authority Contact Details

STAY SAFE What ever job you decide to do please make sure you stay SAFE. Ask you employer if you are unsure how to do something. Make sure you get your EMPLOYMENT CARD
