Physical vs. Chemical Change
Chemical Property A chemical property is a property of matter that describes a substances ability to participate in a chemical reaction. A chemical change.
Physical Property Can be observed with the senses or measured without changing the substance Examples: Melting point Boiling point Color/shape Density.
Matter and Change Unit 1.
Presentation transcript:

After today… (our goals) You should be able to describe physical and chemical changes

Physical Property Traits that are measurable Include: Color, density, melting point, boiling point

Physical Changes When a physical change takes place, you end up with the same things you start with The chemical composition doesn’t change so the material can be returned to its original format There is no obvious energy change

Examples

Chemical Property Describes the ability of something to undergo a chemical change Examples: How likely is it to rust, how likely is it to burn

Chemical Change When we have a chemical change, we start out with completely different stuff than what we end up with The chemical composition changes, atoms get “rearranged” Cannot easily be changed back to it’s original form Often an obvious change in energy (gets really hot or cold)

Chemical Changes Burning (turns into ashes) Cooking Chemical reactions Ex. Zinc and hydrochloric acid

Chemical or Physical
