Recovery to Practice (RTP): American Psychological Association (APA) APA is committed to improving assessment and treatment for people with serious mental illness Accomplishments: Recovery to Practice Office is fully staffed Andrew Austin-Dailey, Director Two steering committees are fully operational Advisory Committee Committee on Assessment and Training Curriculum outline has been developed Curriculum content is under development

Recovery to Practice: American Psychological Association (APA) Guiding concepts for curriculum development: End discrimination and pessimism in prognosis Make self-determination and choice central Ensure community and social inclusion Adhere to the fundamentals of consumer and family-driven care, including cultural competence Use recovery-oriented outcome measures

RTP: American Psychological Association (APA)

Recovery to Practice: American Psychological Association (APA) APA’s Approach Curriculum will be designed to meet the needs of doctoral level psychologists in training Will be a two semester course – can be adapted for seminar format Will be pilot tested with training directors and existing programs that have an emphasis on recovery and psychosocial rehabilitation Feedback from pilot testing will be used to revise and finalize the curriculum for dissemination

Recovery to Practice: American Psychological Association (APA) Implementation: Once finalized, the curriculum will be introduced and marketed to APA accredited training programs Marketing will also take place with State Psychological Associations and State Licensing Boards to encourage adoption of recovery practice requirements Webinars and continuing education venues will be utilized to disseminate the curriculum to already practicing psychologists

Recovery to Practice: American Psychological Association (APA) Implementation, cont’d: APA will pursue other means to disseminate the curriculum and encourage it’s use including: APA’s primary journal, the American Psychologist and APA’s divisional journals and other publications Invited Addresses, Symposia and Workshops with CE credit for psychologists attending the APA’s annual convention and other meetings Presentations at State Psychological Associations and meetings of training directors of APA accredited training programs

Recovery to Practice: American Psychological Association (APA) Expectations for Change: We anticipate the new curriculum and our marketing efforts will: Spur changes in doctoral level psychology training programs Introduce new ways of practicing to existing practitioners Influence mental health policy and service delivery systems where psychologists are influential Ultimately improve the lives of people with serious mental illnesses
