Presentation transcript:

Impact on Diverse Populations “What We know” Addressing the needs of diverse populations is not a primary focus of CR educators Measures of success do not include diversity-relevant outcomes (e.g., impact on intergroup relations or community harmony) People of color do not see mainstream CRE as relevant to their communities

Impact on Diverse Populations “What We know” cont’d Interventions from diverse populations are rarely explored and taught Issues of class receive little focus Structural issues underlying conflict, including systemic bias, receive little attention CRE programs that focus on systemic bias or include “contact theory” can improve intergroup relations and promote just communities Teacher and staff training is critical

Implications for Practice cont’d CRE could/should be a great influence in addressing diversity issues. CRE practitioners need to be culturally competent We need research that focuses on the art of relationship building across diverse communities
