- Classification of Matter II. Composition of Matter Matter Flowchart Mixtures Pure Substances

Classification Reading Read page. 277: How is matter classified? What is the definition of Homogenous Mixture? What is the definition of a Heterogeneous Mixture?

Classification Reading What is an example not listed in the book of a homogeneous mixture? Of a heterogeneous mixture?

Cherry vanilla ice cream Salad dressing Sugar Soil Aluminum Foil Classify the following mixtures as either homogeneous or heterogeneous. Flat soda pop Cherry vanilla ice cream Salad dressing Sugar Soil Aluminum Foil Black coffee Sugar water City air Paint Alcohol Iron

Can it be separated by physical means? A. Matter Flowchart MATTER yes no Can it be separated by physical means? MIXTURE PURE SUBSTANCE Is the composition uniform? no yes Can it be decomposed by chemical means? no yes Homogeneous Mixture (solution) Heterogeneous Mixture Compound Element

Warm-Up What is the definition of matter How can matter be classified?

Classification Reading Read p. 278-279: What properties do all mixtures share? Separation by Physical Means: This means that you can separate a mixture into its components, and then mix it back together again.

Classification Reading One distinguishing characteristic of mixtures is that they can be separated by physical means. Look in your book and find examples of physical means used for separating mixtures. List 3 examples of physical means of separation

Classification Reading Think about a water purifier, what method of separation does it use? What other way would you choose to purify water? Why do you think it is advantageous to separate mixtures?

Group Challenge How would you separate a heterogeneous mixture of popcorn kernels and salt? Justify your steps. Sand and magnetic iron filings? Salt and sand? Sand and water? Sugar and water?

B. Mixtures Variable combination of 2 or more pure substances. Homogeneous Mixture (Solution) even distribution of components very small particles particles never settle EX: saline solution

B. Mixtures Heterogeneous Mixture uneven distribution of components colloids and suspensions EX: granite

B. Mixtures Colloid medium-sized particles Tyndall effect - particles scatter light (looks cloudy) particles never settle EX: milk

B. Mixtures Suspension large particles particles scatter light particles will settle (needs to be shaken) EX: fresh-squeezed lemonade

C. Pure Substances Element matter composed of identical atoms EX: copper

C. Pure Substances Compound matter composed of 2 or more elements in a fixed ratio properties differ from those of individual elements EX: salt (NaCl)
