West Deptford Township Schools Kindergarten Parent Orientation

Welcome Class of 2031

Kindergarten Screening: Will occur on April 17, April 18, and April 19, 2018 at your designated school If the dates above are not feasible for you the next screening will be August 16, 2018. Early Screening Inventory (ESI-R) Developmental screening instrument that is individually administered

Common Parental Questions: What is kindergarten screening? An opportunity to meet your child. It is NOT a test. There is no pass or fail. Developmental screening tool – NOT SKILLS! Not testing letters or sounds

You set the tone about the process  Make new friends. See your new school. Come and play for a little bit: Play with blocks Draw a picture And even hop up and down!

Kindergarten Screening In Action

Common Parental Questions: What if my child gets nervous, shy, or has difficulty with the screening? ALL children age 5 on or before October 1st will be admitted to kindergarten. This is not for a special education referral. No child will be referred to special education based on this screening tool. This is NOT the purpose.

Common Parental Questions: What do I do if my child is a summer birthday? Feel free to call the curriculum office to chat. Parent decision made prior to the start of the year. You know your child best.

Common Parental Questions: What can I do help prepare my child for September? READ & Praise your child READING is NOT a natural process for us. SPEECH is – READING is not. Incorporate nursery rhymes- MOTHER GOOSE Incorporate rhyming books – Dr. Seuss When reading TALK about the story!

What can I do at home to help prepare my child? APRIL 2018
