Question Analyze the long-term and short-term factors responsible for the disintegration of communist rule in TWO if the following states: Czechoslovakia, East Germany .

Background After years of being Soviet satellite states, Czechoslovakia and East Germany became democratic in the few months, though the process was started decades before. In Czechoslovakia, the communist took over in 1948, during a series of events characterized by Communists as a "revolution“ In East Germany Communism was introduced once the Soviets were given control after the fall of Nazi Germany in 1949. By the 1950’s both countries were completely Communist.

Czechoslovakia: In 1969 the Czechs were watching the world on the other side of the “Iron Curtain” become economically prosperous nations. While on the their east the world seem to stay in the same gloom of the post war struggle, and Czechoslovak federalisation was started In the 80’s the capitalists were starting an economic boom, and while the western world was making profits in the billions the Bloc. was feeling the pressure from disgruntled people. Also the “Velvet Divorce” took place in ’89 that would start the end of communist rule. In 1991 with the collapse of the C.C.C.P. it was only 2 years untill Czech communists collapsed from the pressure from the people and the lack of support from their actual ruling party the Russian Soviets. And in 1993 Czechoslovakia would dissolve.

East Germany East Germany was Russia’s diamond in the rough, being the most successful Satellite State. East Germany was also blockaded from the west by the Berlin Wall created in 1961. The East Germans always saw the wall as one of the biggest tools for suppression imposed by the Soviets. And in the 70’s would try to escape by jumping over. The Soviets only made the wall larger, making the tension between East Germens and their state grow. In1989’s with support of the Americans the Berlin wall was torn down. In 3 of October 1990 without the help of the Soviets, the Communist State collapsed and re unification with West Germany took place.
